The Purpose of this study is to explore that a concept of ‘educated man’ in an idea of Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu. To accomplish this end, we critically examine the Tao Te Ching and Chuang-Tzu a perspective for a concept of educated man. Unfortunately, Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu were buried or overlooked for a long time. Nevertheless, their idea seriously affect throughout the east idea of education. Especially, they criticize artificiality and standardized education system based on a knowledge. In this sense, Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu’s educational idea has a possibility to suggest an educational alternative. According to Lao-Tzu and Chuang-Tzu’s educational idea, education faced with an acute crisis caused by excessive competitiveness, monotonous education, overlook student’s spontaneity or individuality. Furthermore their educational ideas are presented for clues in terms of Lao-Tzu and Chuang-Tzu a conversion of view of educational aims or curriculum and a teachers’s role change as solutions for this problem.

이 논문은 『노자』와 『장자』를 중심으로 ‘교육받은 사람’의 모습에 대해 살펴보고, 그것이 오늘날 교육과 관련하여 제시하고 있는 시사점을 검토하는 데 목적이 있다. 우리나라에서 노장 사상은 유학 중심의 풍토로 인해 소홀히 다루어져 온 경향이 있지만, 노장 사상에 담겨있는 ‘성인’이나 ‘지인’의 모습은 물질문명에 매몰 된 채 삶의 주체성을 잃어가고 있는 현대인들에게 경각심을 일깨우기에 충분한 실마리를 제공한다. 노장 사상에 나타난 ‘성인’이나 ‘지인’의 모습에 비추어 볼 때, 오늘날 교육은 ‘교육받은 사람’의 모습에 대한 편협한 관점으로 인해 지나치게 경쟁만을 강조하거나 천편일률적인 지식 교육, 학생 스스로 학습할 수 있는 여건 조성에 실패하는 등의 문제를 노정하게 된다. 이 글은 오늘날 교육이 직면한 문제와 관련하여 해결의 실마리를 노장 사상의 교육 아이디어를 중심으로 교육목적 및 교육내용, 보다 구체적으로는 교사와 학생의 역할에 대한 관점의 전환을 통해 탐색한다.
