｢Rickshaw Man｣, published in in April, 1925, was the work that Ju, yoseob created while he resided in Shanghai, China. This work is a short story about a Chinese rickshaw man, Ajjing's poor life and miserable death, based on Shanghai, China. This research investigated human shape of Ajjing in ｢Rickshaw Man｣ and writer consciousness through comparison with Wookdalbu's short story ｢Bakjeon｣, which has lots of similarity with ｢Rickshaw Man｣ in many aspects. Main character Ajjing in ｢Rickshaw Man｣is the lower class in poor and unsanitary living environment, a helpless lonely man. He is a character who has no moral and ethical consciousness, satisfied with unreasonable reality. He struggled to live, however he also was an unfortunate character who could not evade from the fate of dying young. This research could determine the idea and attitude of that idea and attitude, such as the writer's prosecution of reality and critical consciousness, interest and exclusion of different culture, superior consciousness of intellectuals, satire of Christian falsehood, attention to socialism, and criticism of imperialism and Joseon ethnicity, etc. reflected on the work based on ｢Rickshaw Man｣.

1925년 4월 <개벽>지에 실린 <인력거꾼>은 주요섭이 중국 상하이에 거주할 당시 창작한작품이다. 이 작품은 중국 상하이를 배경으로 중국 인력거꾼 아찡의 가난한 생활과 비참한 죽음을 그린 단편소설이다. 본고는 <인력거꾼>과 여러 면에서 相似点이 많은 중국 작가 郁达 夫의 단편소설<薄奠>과의 비교를 통하여 <인력거꾼>에 등장하는 아찡의 인물형상을 살펴보고 작품에 반영된 작가의식에 대하여 연구하였다. <인력거꾼>의 주인공 아찡은 열약하고비위생적인 생활환경 속에서 사는 하층민이고 의지할 곳 하나 없는 외톨이다. 그는 도덕과 윤리의식이 부재하고 불합리한 현실에 안주하는 인물이다. 비록 살려고 발버둥을 쳐보지만 인력거꾼의 단명의 숙명을 면치 못한 비운의 인물이다. 본고는 <인력거꾼>에 대한 고찰을 통하여작품에 반영된 작가의 異문화에 대한 관심과 배척, 인력거꾼에 대한 인식과 태도, 기독교 허위성에 대한 풍자와 사회주의 사상적 경향 그리고 제국주의와 조선민족성에 대한 비판 등 당시 생각과 태도를 알 수 있었다.
