In his earlier life, Hieronymus held to strict asceticism, but he developed his attitude of asceticism from strict to a more moderate form in his later life. This article examines the reasons why he changed his view of asceticism, especially related to the Pelagian controversy. During the Pelagian controversy, Hieronymus needed to compete with Pelagius for financial patronage. This matter made him change his view on strict asceticism to a more moderate form of asceticism in order to get financial support from Anicia family. Moreover, this change happened, while he was changing his view on asceticism based on human beings’ good nature in his earlier life to God’s grace as a human needs. This implies Hieronymus moved his emphasis on asceticism from human being’s effort and possibility to pursue virtue more to the function of God’s grace. Thus he considered Pelagius’ claimed doctrines were harmful both for the ascetics and for laymen, and were fundamentally different from his own view on Christian life. In the context of the practice of asceticism Pelagius and Hieronymus brought different understandings of divine help. That is to say that in the late 4th and early 5th century of the early church there were differing levels of asceticism and differing views of divine help within the sphere of asceticism. Some more stringent and others less so. Pelagius was on one extreme end of the spectrum and instead Hieronymus was in the middle, since he changed his view on asceticism from strict to moderate, because he knew human beings need divine help on the way of ascetic life to pursue virtue during the Pelagian controversy.
