What did Christianity mean to Yi Gwang-su and Na Hye-seok, who were enlightened elites and modernist writers in the history of modern Korean literature? In other words, how exactly did they understand the Christian religion pertaining to the formation of a new, modern identity and the development of worldviews? Initially, in the view of Yi Gwang-su and Na Hye-seok, Christianity was a "modernizing phenomenon." It was the access to Western or modern civilization and the principal means to Korea's enlightenment and modernization. In this way, they understood and appropriated Christianity as a spiritual and ideological foundation from which the Korean nation and women could be modernized and enlightened as a new identity. Na Hye-seok appropriated the ideas and ethics in Christianity with relation to the issues of women's equality and dignity as a human being. For Korean women, Christianity results in realizing their own selfhood and establishing their autonomy and independence in society and the family. Korean women's attitudes and determination regarding their identity and lives derived from their religious spirituality and relationships with God. In Yi Gwang-su's writings, Christianity played an essential role in the development of a nationalist, Christian identity, which displays moral and puritanical, self-sacrificing and patriotic character, on the other hand. The images of a prophet teacher and pioneering woman are deeply associated with their religious passion and devotion. Yi Gwang-su and Na Hye-seok both discovered and pursed an ethic in Christianity consisting such values as a human's dignity, selflessness, love, peace, care, benevolence, and sacrifice. The nationalism, patriotism, and enlightenment of Yi Gwang-su were significantly informed by these values and ethics. In particular, Yi took the Christian thoughts and ethics as the basis for his vision. However, it is undeniable that their understanding and appropriations of Christianity remained obscure, idealist, and abstract, especially considering the historical circumstance of Korea. In short, Christianity created and fostered in them a positive self-conception, self-confidence, and feelings of hope and optimism. Moreover, it provided them with a strong sense of responsibility and obligation toward society and the Korean nation. Christianity cultivated in their minds a pioneering spirit and religious devotion toward society and its people. Their understanding and perceptions of Christianity are interwoven with the socio-historical context of colonized/modern Korea.

이 글은 한국문학 초기 근대적 작가이며 식민지 지식인이었던 이광수와 나혜석의 기독교에 대한 인식과 수용 방식을 비교, 고찰하려는 논문이다. 특히 이광수와 나혜석의 글 속에 나타난 기독교적 인식과 신앙이 개인의 근대적 정체성과 가치관 형성에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는가를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 나혜석은 우선 여성의 입장에서 기독교를 이해하고 신앙하였다. 신앙심을 토대로 자신을 새롭게 변화시키고, 나아가 조선 여성들, 민족과 동포에 대한 책임감과 소명감을 키워나갔다. 무엇보다도 ‘하느님의 딸’로서 여성의 존엄성과 주체성을 강조하였다. 나혜석의 글에서 기독교 인식과 수용 방식은 하느님의 딸, 개척자 정체성 그리고 할머니의 복음으로 표현된다. 그녀의 글에서 여성의 자아 각성 및 계몽에 대한 열정은 기독교 신앙심과 혼재되었거나 그것과 연동되어 나타난다. 또한 나혜석의 종교의식은 조선, 국가, 민족에 국한되지 않고 인류, 동포 세계 전체로 확대되는 양상을 보였다. 이광수의 글에서 기독교는 먼저 윤리적, 계몽적, 민족적 성격이 짙다. 기독교 신앙은 도덕과 절제를 통한 개인의 금욕적 개조를 강조했으며, 궁극적으로는 민족과 사회에 대한 책임감과 애국심을 강화하였다. 나혜석과 이광수의 글에서 신앙심은 기본적으로 애국심과 민족주의적 열정과 혼재되어 표현된다. 세상을 위한, 조선 여성들을 위한 개척자의 고행 그리고 민족, 동포를 위한 선도자의 자기희생은 종교적 헌신과 순교 의식에 가깝다. 신앙심에 토대한 자기에 대한 확신과 개조에 대한 의지는 사회와 민족에 대한 사명감으로 이어지는데 이들은 개척자와 선도자 정체성으로 각각 구현된다. 이러한 이들의 종교적 정체성은 민족과 국가를 위한 기독교의 희생적 윤리를 재현한다. 자신의 삶을 희생하고 민족과 국가를 위해 헌신하는 개척자, 선도자 정체성은 성경의 국가관과 연상시키는데, 당시 조선 사회가 처한 암울한 역사적 현실과 밀접히 연관된다. 그리고 이타심과 박애, 희생, 보살핌, 그리고 인류 보편적 사랑은 이광수와 나혜석이 기독교 신앙에서 공통적으로 발견하고 추구한 윤리적, 정신적 가치이다. 기독교 신앙에서 인류 보편적 가치와 인도주의 추구는 조선의 식민지 지식인으로서 이광수와 나혜석의 기독교 인식의 특징과 한계를 동시에 보여준다고 할 수 있다.
