"Forever Lily" is a novel written by famous Chinese writer Zhengya Xu in 1912, which was inspired by the one of the greatest Chinese classical novel "The Dream of Red Chamber". It was an immediate hit with the Chinese readers when it got published and it was soon introduced into Korea and gained huge popularity there as well. The novel has got two versions of Korean translations.The first version was translated in 1919 and the second one was finished in 1935. The reason it got translated twice within a rather short period of 16 years is that it was closely related to "The Dream of Red Chamber", which at the time caused a phenomenon in Korea and had attracted a number of versions of translation. Since its Korean version was published in Korea, it made a stir there which has brought about a substantial interest in this genre of novel. This research also includes a comparison of the two Korean versions which contain the parts relating to "The Dream of Red Chamber". It has concluded that the quality of the translation is largely dependent on the complete understanding of the original novel by the translator. In some occasions, it has even caused inaccurate translations which has deviated from the original novel's content due to miscomprehension by the translator.

옥리혼은 서침아가 1912년에 창작한 소설로 신문에 연재하자마자 큰 인기를 얻었다. 그리고 한국에도 전해져 1919년과 1935년에 번역이 이루어졌다. 16년이라는 짧은 기간 동안 이 작품이 두 번이나 번역된 가장 큰 이유는 홍루몽과의 관계를 꼽을 수 있다. 옥리혼은 당시 홍루몽류 계몽소설 번역 열풍의 연장선상에 있는 작품인 것이다. 본문에서는 두 역문에 나타난 홍루몽 관련 부분의 번역 상황을 비교해 보고 역자의 원문에 대한 이해가 번역의 질에 얼마나 영향을 미칠 수 있는지 알아보고자 한다.
