This study analyses the direct and indirect effects produced by the Asian countries’ cultural idiosyncrasies on the international trade flows in the region. The indirect effects work through cultural distance and the extent of economic freedom. While all six cultural dimensions considered in this analysis are found to be producing strong and robust effects on the international trade flows, only power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and individualism are found to have strong direct effects. Empirical findings of this study suggest a tradeoff between the role of the government as a constraint on economic freedom, and its role as a tool of mitigating external risks associated with the international trade deals. This study may serve as a motivation for theoretical work aimed at creating a framework examining the tradeoff between businesses’ freedom and their ability to handle international trade-related risks.

본 연구는 아시아 국가들의 문화적 특질에 의해서 발생된 지역에서의 국제무역 흐름에 대한 직/간접 효과를 분석 한다. 간접적인 효과는 문화차이 및 경제적 자유도를 통해서 작동한다. 본 연구에서 고려된 6개의 모든 문화 단면에 서 국제 무역 흐름에 대한 강력하고 확고한 효과가 발견되지만, 권력 수용도, 불확실성 회피도, 개인주의에서만 강력 한 직접 효과가 발견된다. 이 연구의 실증연구 결과는 경제 자유에 대한 제한요소로 정부의 역할과 국제적 무역 거래와 연관된 외부 위험요소를 완화시켜주는 정부의 역할 간 상쇄관계를 제시한다. 이 연구는 사업체의 자유와 국 제적 무역환경에서의 위험요소를 다루는 능력 간 상쇄관계를 검증하는 프레임워크를 창출하기 위한 이론적 연구를 진행할 동기를 부여한다.
