Kikutoudai, which appeared in literary journal Shincho (December 1985), is a short novel of Shibusawa Tatsuhiko’s later years. Shibusawa (1928‐1987) was a French literature scholar and translator, who introduced many Western literary works to Japan. He was known as his profound knowledge of rare books and uncommon literary works. Besides, because of his some famous short stories, he has been also well known as a fantasy writer. The work is based on the story Uga no Chozya Monogatari which is written by Tanaka Koutaro. Shibusawa Tatsuhiko explains in the end of Kikutoudai as follows: “I inflated the image freely to change the story to become a new one.” Based upon and having started from the original text, Shibusawa wrote a creative fantasy world. How did he refer to and then transform the original text, with regard to the plot development and the characters in Kikutoudai? By examining the intertextuality in the story, the memory of the protagonist, and the role of mask in the story, I will investigate how Shibusawa created his own narrative world.
