The goal of this study is to examine argument-adjunct asymmetry in Japanese. It is well known that there is an asymmetry between wh-arguments and wh-adjuncts in Japanese. So are classifier constructions. In these constructions, arguments are grammatical, whereas adjuncts are not. However, this paper introduces quite a different type of argument-adjunct asymmetry in Japanese, that is, multiple negative sensitive item constructions. These constructions are very reverse to the wh-constructions and classifier constructions. Interesting enough, in these constructions, adjuncts are grammatical, whereas arguments are not. This paper holds that phonology-syntax interface could be one of effective theological implications to clarify argument-adjunct asymmetry in Japanese.
