Preachers generally search for illustration to compose their sermons. This is because they know the persuasive power of a sermon can treble when illustration gives realism, integrity and compassion to congregation. And illustration can exegete the Bible in therms of human experience to recreate the God’s word. However, if a preacher use many illustrations in composing a sermon, this sermon may build on many illustrations rather than on biblical texts because illustration is just a means, not an end. And illustration can be varied as follows: brief quotes, described scene, episode, picture, story, dialogue, parable and so on. Anyway, to resolve illustrations having disadvantages, a preacher need to understand and use parable that is a kind of illustrations. Firstly, it is important to understand parable correctly. Parable is expressed as follows: Metaphor and Simile, Synecdoche and Metonymy, and Symbol. Jesus used parables to teach. Certainly, preachers should use parables to teach life lessons and theological concepts. This is because parable is for human as a device of imagination and rhetoric. parable is not extraordinary language, but it is ordinary language. Secondly, A preacher should know how to use parable in a sermon. preaching makes parables, and preachers put God’s word and parable together in composing a sermon over and over. Thus, preachers speak in parables. This paper explain how to use parables to compose a sermon, by recreating David Buttrick’s three points are like 1) Is there a clear analogy being drawn?; 2) Is there a structural similarity between content and the shape of the illustration?; 3) Is the illustration appropriate to the content?

설교자들은 일반적으로 설교를 작성하기 위해 예화를 찾고 활용한다. 왜냐 하면 설교자가 만일 예화를 성도에게 현실적이고 감각적으로 사용한다면, 설 교가 갖는 설득의 힘이 배가되기 때문이다. 예화는 인간 경험의 관점에서 하나 님의 말씀을 재창조하여 해석하는 힘을 가지고 있다. 그러나 예화 사용의 가장 큰 문제점은 설교를 작성할 때에 설교자가 예화를 지나치게 많이 사용할 경우 에, 설교는 본문을 경시하고 예화에 초점이 맞춰질 수밖에 없다. 다시 말해, 예 화는 설교의 주객이 바뀌는 문제를 일으킬 수 있다. 그러므로 예화는 설교의 목적이 아니라, 수단일 뿐이다. 그러므로 설교자는 예화 사용의 단점을 해결하기 위해서 예화의 한 종유인 비유를 이해하고 사용할 줄 알아야 한다. 첫째, 설교자가 생각하는 비유에 관 한 바른 이해가 무엇보다도 중요한다. 비유는 은유와 직유, 제유와 환유, 그리 고 상징으로 표현된다. 또한 예수도 비유를 사용하여 가르치셨으며, 우리도 예 수처럼 비유를 사용하여 일상의 교훈과 신학적인 개념들을 쉽게 전달해야 한 다. 왜냐하면 비유는 인간이면 누구나 공유하고 있는 상상과 수사적인 기술이 기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 비유는 특별한 언어가 아니라, 일상 언어로서 우리의 삶에 언제나 활용되고 있다. 둘째, 설교자는 설교 작성을 위해서 반드시 적절한 비유 사용방법을 알고 있어야 한다. 왜냐하면 설교를 비유로 이루어져 있다 말하고 과언이 아니기 때 문이다. 또한 설교자는 설교를 작성하면서 하나님의 말씀과 비유를 조화롭게 배치한다. 그러므로 논문은 David Buttrick이 주장하는 세 가지 방법인 1) 성 경 본문 내용과 비유 사이에 분명한 유사성과 인접성이 있는가? 2) 성경 본문 내용과 비유 사이에 얼마큼 일치하는가? 3) 혹시 성경 본문 내용과 어울릴 수 있는 속담(격언)이나 새로운 문화에서 파생된 비유는 없을까?를 수정, 보완하 여 설교 작성에 있어 적절한 비유 사용방법을 설명한다.
