Natsume Soseki insisted the contribution of neurasthenia in creation from the firstbook I Am a Cat through arguing the relationship between poets and inspiration. Then, to the Botchan and trilogy of former part, the writer pursues his researchby the character suffering from neurasthenia as a main issue. Since then, he looksto the inner world of human beings. In the trilogy of latter part, the topic ofneurasthenia is not just shaped into somebodies in the work, but provides afoundation through the full-scale study of man that can objectify themselves. In theGrass on the Wayside and Light and Darkness, not limited in viewpoint andcharacter, the attitude of writing is changed to describe everything objectively andfairly. Soseki as an artist has gone through a neurasthenia. And he allowed to maturehimself unconsciously by his experiences. Thus, by the works reflecting pathologicdepressive mood inside himself, it seems that he has been able to have the peaceof mind.
