Intercultural marriages in Japan increased rapidly in the 1980s. This phenomenonwas related to international population movement with the advance of globalization. I would like to point out two characteristics about intercultural marriages in thisperiod. Firstly the numbers of Japanese men‐non Japanese women marriages werefar larger than Japanese women‐non Japanese men marriages .Secondly there weremany intercultural marriages in rural communities, for example Filipina‐Japaneseintercultural marriages. Those women which were married in Japanese ruralcommunities were called“the Brides from Asia”(Ajia karano hanayome)at the time. The aim of this paper is to examine the change of assessment of interculturalmarriages in Japanese society through the research trend and newspaper articleson intercultural marriages. I think that it is important to consider about views onagriculture and rural communities in Japanese modern history for this theme, as sameas gender, ethnicity, culture and so on.
