In Pre-Qin Chinese, the noun “shuang” was grammaticalized as a quantifier,from which derived a classifier “shuang” and a numeral “shuang” later.The weakening function of the state adjective “shuangshuang”in modern Chinese plus the enhanced function of the classifier “shuang”after the Tang Dynasty,which brought about the emergence of the overlapped format of classifier “shuangshuang.Thus, in contemporary Chinese, “shuangshuang” possesses two distinctive properties.One is the adverb “shuangshaung”which is grammaticaliazed from the state adjective,the other is adjective reduplication“shuangshang”.In ancient times, ”yishuang” funtioned as the metrical predicate which follows noun phrases. Later on, it became descriptive modifier which is in front of noun phrases in mediaeval times and finally evolved into both metrical and descriptive modifier in modern times due to the omitting of “zhi”.There was no intermediate stage as“shuang zhi NP”in the process of the the change from “NP shuang”into “shuang NP”.That is to say,“shuang”in “shuang NP”was just a metrical modifier.Therefore,“shuang” in “shuang NP” is metrical while “yishuang” in “yishuang NP” is both metrical and descriptive.The nature and function of “shuang” was vague in ancient Chinese, with constant development, which was precisely defined as a noun(as a surname), a quantifier and a numeral in contemporary Chinese ultimately.

상고한어에서 명사 ‘双’은 수량사 ‘双’으로 허화(虚化)하였고, 여기서 다시 양사 ‘双’과 수사‘双’로 분화하였다. 근대한어에서는 상태형용사 ‘双双’의 기능이 약화하고, 당대 이후에 ‘双’의양사 기능이 증가함으로 인해 양사 중첩 격식인 ‘双双’이 탄생하게 되었다. 그렇게 해서 현대한어에서 두 개의 서로 다른 성질의 ‘双双’, 즉 상태형용사의 허화로 인해 생긴 부사 ‘双双’과양사 중첩으로 이루어진 형용사 ‘双双’이 존재하게 된다. ‘双双’은 ‘一一’, “两两” 등 수사 중첩식과 통사 위치가 동일하고, 또 “两两”와 함께 중첩식 안에 위치할 수도 있다. ‘一双’은 최초의 상고시기에 NP 뒤에 위치한 계량성의 술위성분(述谓成分)이 NP 앞으로이동한 뒤 중고시기에 묘사성 수식성분으로 변한 것이다. 나중에 ‘之’의 탈락으로 인해 근현대에는 다시 점차적으로 계량성과 묘사성을 겸한 수식성분으로 변하였다. ‘NP双’이 ‘双NP’로변하는 과정에서 ‘双之NP’의 단계를 거치지 않았다. 즉, ‘双NP’에서 ‘双’은 단지 계량성의 수식성분일 뿐이다. 그래서 ‘双NP’에서 ‘双’은 [+계량성]을 지니고, ‘一双NP’에서 ‘一双’은 [+계량성]과 [+묘사성]을 지닌다. ‘双’은 고대한어에서 수사와 양사의 혼돈상태가 있었던 것은 분명하다. 나중에 이러한 상태가 점차 소실되고 근대, 특히 현대한어에서 ‘双’의 성질과 기능이 명사(성씨 ‘双’), 양사, 수사로 명확해졌다.
