The concept of classic gentrification, involving the renovation of older city centreproperties, originated with Ruth Glass and has a long and well-documented historyin the West. As urban changes have become more complex and involved with variousfactors, gentrification has mutated in terms of form and process. This research aimsto help the expansion of gentrification research in Korea by reviewing the researchtrends concerning from classical gentrification to contemporary gentrification in theWest which can be applied to gentrification in Korea. It gives an account of mainlySmith’ s arguments, and also assesses the usefulness of using the concept of contemporarygentrification to explain urban changes in Korea.

Glass의 개념 정의에 기원한 고전적 젠트리피케이션은 도심지역의 저소득층 주거지로 중간계급이 오래된 주택을 수리해 이주해옴으로써 기존의 저소득층을 대체하는 과정으로 서구에서 오랜 기간 연구가 진행되어왔다. 도시의 변화가 점차복잡해지고 다양한 요소와 연결되면서, 형태와 과정면에서 젠트리피케이션은 다양한 모습으로 변화되어왔다. 한국 젠트리피케이션 연구의 확장을 위해 본 연구는 서구에서 진행된 고전적 젠트리피케이션에서 현재까지의 연구 동향을 닐 스미스의 논쟁을 중심으로 살펴보고, 이러한 논의가 한국 도시 상황 설명에서 유용성을 평가한다.
