This paper argues that Adorno’s account of religion fundamentally aims to go toward social criticism on the basis of some theoretical works that critically examine some religious implications in his philosophy. Adorno explores how christianity has controlled society and has given some legitimacy of the powers and collusion with the powers, then he criticizes metaphysics of death, institutionalization of religion, the role of the clergy, sexual rule, christian roots of anti-Semitism. Here he doubts the potentiality of religious emancipation and suggests the true religious role and ideas. When we consider Adorno’s religious ideas of political theology, particularly if its social practice and internal logic of religion works properly, there should be an ambivalent evaluation on it. Adorno’s religious thought seems to involve failures to notice the combination of positivity and negativity and the lack of empirical argument. These make Adorno’s account of religion problematic. Nevertheless, I would like to argue that his criticism of religion as social criticism is still useful for criticizing and searching for alternatives to the unfinished secularization in Korea. His critical reflection of the relation between Judaism and Christianity shows us a theoretical basis that would deal with religious fundamentalism and religious conflict in postmodern religious pluralism.

아도르노는 사회비판의 일환으로 종교비판을 일관되게 전개하였다. 이것은 아도르노 철학의 종교적 함의를 추적하는 이론적 작업에 의문을 던지며 그의 작업이 반(反)신학임을 논증할 수 있는 근거를 제시한다. 그는 기독교가 어떻게 지배로서 작용하고 현실권력 에 대한 정당성을 부여하며 권력과 결탁했는지를 검토한다. 아도르노 는 종교-사회의 관계라는 프리즘을 통해 죽음의 형이상학, 종교의 제 도화, 성직자 역할, 성적 지배, 반유대주의의 기독교적 뿌리를 비판적 으로 규명한다. 여기로부터 그는 종교의 해방적 잠재력에 대한 회의 를 표명함과 동시에 진정한 종교의 이념과 역할을 제시한다. 아도르 노의 관점에서 정치신학, 해방신학은 이중적인 평가가 가능하다. 아도 르노의 종교비판은 종교의 부정성과 긍정성의 유기적 결합, 경험적 논증의 결핍, 종교역할 관련 주장의 내적 충돌 등 난점들을 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 ‘미완의 세속화’에 머물고 있는 한국의 종교현상 을 비판하고 대안을 모색하는 데 여전히 유효하다. 유대교와 기독교 와의 관계에 대한 그의 비판적 성찰은 종교 근본주의 문제와 종교다 원주의 사회에서 종교 갈등을 다루는 데 의미 있는 단서를 제공한다.
