Nutritional Strategies for Improving Performance in Triathlon

Triathlon combines three events such as swimming, cycling and running. The competitions last between 1 hour(sprint course: swim 750m, bike 20km, run 5km) and 17 hours(Ironman course: swim 3.8km, bike 180km marathon 42km). Triathlon performance is determined by physiological and nutritional factors, all acting as an integrated package which can enhance performance. There is not sufficient data about nutritional strategies in triathlon. The aim of this review is to identify nutritional considerations in triathlon and to provide nutritional recommendations for enhancing triathlon performance. Nutritional strategies are essential considerations for optimal performance and should reflect the specific requirements of the triathlon event. Specifically, we will focus on how to manipulate the optimal nutrition intake for enhancing performance and recovery in triathlon.
