Peer tutoring programs have been currently implemented in Korean undergraduate education in order to assist incoming students to improve their basic academic knowledge and skills. Although there have been numerous studies about the effect of peer tutoring programs on various subject areas and their operational aspects, only very little research has been done on the effect of tutoring programs on students' general English achievement. This study aims to investigate how peer tutoring influences the tutees' basic English proficiency and their grades on General English. A total of 189 tutees took part in this study for three semesters. An 8-week tutoring program was offered to the participants per semester. They took pre-post English tests and completed the survey at the end of the program to see how effectively the program was operated and how much the tutees were satisfied with the program and the tutors. Also, the best tutees selected by the tutors were asked to fill in the pros and cons of the program. The findings revealed that the tutoring program has positively affected the tutuees' English abilities and their grades on General English. Statistical significant mean differences were found between pre and post English tests in each semester, and the tutees' grades on General English were also statistically improved. The survey results also revealed that the tutees perceived that the program helped them studying the basic English words, pronunciation and grammar and understanding the meanings of English sentences as well as increasing of their interests and self-confidence in English. On the other hand, the survey results showed several improvement parts involving opportunities studying with various lesson materials, a longer program operation period and advanced educational environment. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.

최근 대학에서 학생들의 기초 학습 능력 향상을 위해 튜터링 프로그램을 진행하고 있으며 특히 동료 튜터링 프로그램을 통해 참여 학생들의 학습 성취 향상을 위해 노력하고 있다. 하지만 대학 내 교양영어 교과목 관련 동료 튜터링에 대한 연구는 미비하고 학업 성취관련 연구가 거의 없어 이 연구를 실시하였다. 이 연구는 3학기 동안 각기 진행되었던 동료 영어 튜터링 프로그램이 튜티 학습자들의 학습 성취와 만족도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위해 실시하였다. 2014학년 2학기부터 2015년 2학기까지 3학기 동안 동료 튜터링 프로그램에 참여한 튜티 189명을 대상으로 튜더링 프로그램 이전과 이후 영어시험을 실시하여 향상도 측면에서 차이가 있는지, 교양영어 성적에 차이가 있는지를 살펴보았으며 설문지를 통해 튜터링의 학습효과, 튜터에 대한 만족도와 튜터링 프로그램에 대한 만족도에 대해 알아보았다. 한편 우수 튜티가 인지한 프로그램의 장점과 단점에 대해서도 알아보았다. 그 결과 튜터링에 참여했던 학습자들의 영어 성적이 유의미하게 향상되었으며, 교양영어 성적을 비교한 결과 튜터링에 참여했던 학기의 성적이 튜터링에 참여하지 않았던 전 학기의 성적에 비해 유의미하게 향상 되었다. 세부 점수대 별로 분석 한 결과 교양영어 성적이 하위권에 있었던 튜티들이 상위권보다 점수의 향상도가 훨씬 더 컸다. 이를 통해 튜티들은 선배 튜터와의 튜터링 학습을 통해 영어 학습 성취 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다고 볼 수 있겠다. 또한 설문지와 우수 튜티의 소감문 자료를 통해 소규모로 진행된 튜터링 학습이 영어에 대한 흥미와 자신감을 갖는데 도움이 되며 단어와 문법, 영어 문장 해석과 발음 등에 긍정적인 영향을 준다고 인지하였으며, 자신에게 도움을 준 튜티가 열의를 가지고 수업을 했으며 자기들의 질문이나 학습 도움 요청에 성실하게 답변해 주었으며 프로그램에 대해 전체적으로 만족하고 있다고 인지하였다. 개선되어야 할 사항으로는 튜터링 전용공간과 튜터링 기간 확대 운영 등과 같은 교육환경 향상과 다양한 교육 자료 제공을 지적하였다. 본 연구 결과는 대학의 영어 튜터링 프로그램을 운영하는데 기초자료로 활용될 수 있으며 동료 영어 튜터링 프로그램이 교양영어를 듣는 수강생들의 학습 성과를 규명함으로써 학습자들의 기초영어능력 향상을 위한 새로운 교육적 대안 마련에 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다.
