This paper reviews on research trends and applications in geography of religions based on the missionary records of minutes, reports, correspondences, articles, and photos about Korean Mission. The missionary who had migrated for the purpose of religious propagation had quickly to adapt to the lifestyle in the field and transplant the religion. Therefore the missionaries made a lot of records in the process of solving the problems, sharing the information, and communicating with one another. The records are worth of valuable documents as the empirical and realistic materials to understand the overall facts of the mission field and grasp the origin, distribution, diffusion, landscape, and the effects of the geography relating the mission. These are based not only on the foundation for understanding the modern history of Korea but also on the data in developing the role model and strategy for missions. It is promising to conduct interdisciplinary studies on geography of religions as missionary documents include diverse information on culture and society of local people.

본고는 내한 선교활동 기록물인 회의록, 보고서, 서신, 기고문, 사진 등을 토대로 종교 지리의 연구동향을 살펴본 것이다. 종교 전파를 목적으로 이주한 선교사는 선교지의 생 활양식에 빠르게 적응하며 종교도 이식해야 했다. 이를 위해 선교사는 당면한 문제와 정보들을 서로 공유 및 소통하며 문제를 해결해 가는 과정에서 많은 기록을 남겼다. 이 기록물은 선교지의 전반적인 생활을 이해할 수 있는 경험적이며 실증적인 사료로서 그 가치가 크고, 선교의 기원, 분포, 확산, 경관, 영향을 알 수 있으며 선교의 롤 모델 연구와 선교전략의 개발에도 중요한 자료일 뿐 아니라 한국의 근현대사를 이해할 수 있는 토대이기도 하다. 선교문서의 특성이 다양성, 통합성, 전문성을 띠고 있기 때문에 학제 간 융합연구도 가능하고 문화콘텐츠로 개발 및 활용도 가능해 미래의 종교지리 연구 전망은 밝다고 하겠다.
