This article explores the ecological activities of Silsang-sa (an old temple on Jiri Mountain) to find the possibility of place-based religious ecological movements. For this purpose, I analyze the topology of Silsang-sa related to the development of the Korean Ecological Movement. Here, the term ‘topology’ is used in a double meaning to indicate the discussions on ‘topos’. One is to look into the topos of Silsang-sa’s ecological activities related to the development of the Korean Ecological Movement. The other is to explore the mode of signifying the place of Jiri Mountain by Silsang-sa. I will analyze the space organization of Silsang-sa as a materialization of heterotopia. By showing the main religious properties used by Silsang-sa for ecological activities, I explore the characteristics and limits of Silsang-sa’s Religious Ecological Movement.

이 논문은 지리산 실상사의 생태적 실천을 분석함으로써, 구체적인 장소에 뿌리내린 종교생태운동의 가능성을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 Ⅱ장에서는 생태운동 에서 장소 기반의 운동이 왜 중요한 것인지를 살피고, 그러한 운동에서 문화와 종교의 중요성을 조명할 것이다. Ⅲ장에서는 한국 생태운동의 전개 과정에서 실상사의 자리를 검토함으로써 실상사 중심 생태운동이 지닌 의의를 살펴보고, 실상사의 생태운동이 지리 산 속 사찰이라는 장소성을 적극 활용하여 일종의 그물코로서 기능하는 측면을 분석할 것이다. 이때 실상사의 생태운동에서 종교의 주요 자산이 활용되는 방식 및 실상사 생태운동이 지 리산이라는 장소를 의미화하는 방식을 분석함으로써, 종교공간을 중심으로 한 풀뿌리 생태운동의 특성과 한계를 살필 것이다. Ⅳ장에서는 지역의 종교공간을 활용한 풀뿌리 종교생태운동의 독특함을 드러내는 사례로서, 헤테로토피아의 물리적 구현으로 서 실상사의 공간 구성을 구체적 사례를 통해 분석할 것이다. Ⅴ장에서는 실상사 생태운 동의 의의와 한계를 짚어 보고, 장소에 기반을 둔 풀뿌리 종교생태운동의 가능성을 가늠 해볼 것이다.
