The aim of this essay is to critically clarify the ecological vision and the significance of the Jirisan Trail tour. This is related to the concept of so-called ‘eco-tourism’. Today, the alienating aspects of alpinism and package tourism, the two widespread mountain tour modes, make us turn our attention to eco-tourism as an alternative tour mode. This mode does not regard the nature around us as objects of conquest and possession. Eco-tourism is essentially a tour mode which maximizes the positive influence of nature on the vitality of the human mind. It does this by minimizing the ideological and cultural intervention which alienates tourists from the nature and culture of their sightseeing places. Furthermore, it does not set the goal at ‘reaching the summit’, ‘running the whole course’ or ‘economy of time’. It requires us only to have the willingness to walk slowly - then the ecological sensitivity can open to the nature around us. In this sense, it can be regarded as an ecologically sustainable pro-environmental tour mode that could awake us from the Western ‘enlightened’ mentality (one-sided ‘reification’ and ‘domination’ of nature). My main thesis in this essay is that the Jirisan Trail has the ecological vision and potential which could promote a sustainable and responsible tourism. There are three reasons for this. First, the Jirisan Trail is a long-distance walking trail connecting the historical mountain paths and village roads in a natural setting. Second, it is a trail of discovery - awaking the walkers’ ecological sensitivity with various sorts of unforeseen wonders. And third, its identity as a long-distance walking trail tends to prevent pollution since there is no nearby traffic. In this sense, I think that the Jirisan Trail could gradually gain a significant status as a fitting place for eco-tourism with a sustainable culture of tourism.

이 글의 목적은 이른바 ‘생태여행’의 개념과 관련된 지리산 둘레길 여행의 의의와 비전을 비판적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 오늘날 일반화된 산지여행의 두 축인 알피니즘과 패키지여행의 소외된 양상들은 자연을 정복과 소유의 대상으로 치부하지 않는 대안적 여행양식으로서 생태여행이 활성화될 수 있는 가능성에 우리를 주목케 한다. 생태여행은 여행객과 여행지의 자연 및 문화 사이를 이간하는 이데올로기적ㆍ문화적 개입을 최소화 함으로써 인간 정신의 활력에 미치는 자연의 긍정적 영향을 최대화하는 여행양식이다. 더욱이 그것은 ‘등정’과 ‘답파’를 목적으로 하지 않으며, 시간의 경제학을 추구하지도 않는다. 생태여행을 하는 데 필요한 것은 오직 천천히 걸을 용의와 주변의 자연을 향하여 개방된 생태적 감수성뿐이다. 그러한 점에서 생태여행은 자연의 ‘물화’와 ‘지배’를 일방 적으로 추구해 온 서구적 계몽의 에토스를 생태적 책임성의 방향으로 견인할 ‘동화’ 지향적 대안여 행의 유력한 가능태로 간주될 수 있다. 한편 최근 들어 대중의 큰 관심을 끌어 온 지리산 둘레길은 그러한 생태여행의 문화를 촉진할 충분한 비전과 잠재력을 갖는다고 생각된다. 본질적으로 지리산 둘레길은 있는 그대로의 산길과 마을길을 훼손 없이 온존하여 연결한 길이고, 그 품에 안긴 사람의 생태적 감수성을 예상 밖의 경이들로 흔들어 깨우는 길이며, 알피니스트의 답파욕에 부 응할 수 없는 장거리 도보길 정체성으로 화석연료에 의존하는 주행문화의 침범을 자연스 럽게 예방하는 길이기 때문이다. 그러한 점에서 지리산 둘레길은 지속가능한 여행문화의 안착이 기대되는 생태여행 적합지로서 견실한 위상을 점차로 확보해 나가게 될 것이다.
