The purpose of this paper is to describe, explain and argue that the pictogram is made of semiotical rule and, that every works of design willing to become a kind of that of universal needs this rule. The methods we applied in order to fit to this study are argumentation and cases studies. The works of pictogram have been used to copy the thing iconically, without knowing that the icon as a particulier sign has not always its reality in itself. The pictogram signs are basically composed by index, symbols and icons together in a semiotical system-difference and history. This has been argumented by examining point, line, space and some cases like pictograms of Olympic games, the mathematics and interface mataphors. Through analyzing some cases of pictograms, we are finding that every pictogram which we have explored in order to argue our statement has its roots of system and history. It is not either systemic nor historic to make a pictogram on the base of global standard which has not any sort of regional and national identity. The pictogram that we have to pursue should be historically justified

이 연구는 픽토그램의 일반은 기호의 규칙 속에서 만들어지는 것이기 때문에 규범적인 디자인을 만들고자 한다면 조형기호의 일반 규칙을 존중하는 것이 필요하다는 주장을 논증한다. 픽토그램은 시각적 편이성만을 추구했던 이유로 항상 기호의 도상적 성질에 집중해 왔다. 그러나 도상은 항상 사실적인 의미를 전달하지 않으며 정보의 성격에 따라 왜곡된다. 도상을 벗어나는 픽토그램은 기호로서 지표와 상징의 성격을 지니는데 이들 기호는 차이와 체계에 의해서 의미를 발생시킨다. 이 논문은 점선면의 조형규칙을 통해 이를 논증했다. 아울러 픽토그램의 의미는 체계적이기는 하지만 실은 픽토그램을 만든 사람과 문화의 역사를 지니고 있다. 올림픽 픽토그램은 이 사실을 정확하게 실증해 준다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 여러 사례 중에서도 인터페이스 메타포를 통해 그 체계성과 역사성의 중간적 논리를 밝히고 설명했다. 오늘날 글로벌 스탠더드 디자인이라 불리워 지는 디자인 커뮤니케이션은 체계적이지도 역사적이지도 못하다. 단지 강제된 것이다. 따라서 글로벌 스탠더드라는 것은 인간적 창작과 상상력에 반하는 개념이며 반 민주주의적인 발상이라는 점을 상기한다.
