Our study reveals, based on analysis and examination of quantitative data on current facility management of institute of science and technology, that the acquisition rates of such institutes’ facilities, including school area and gross floor area per student, were higher than the averages of other universities in the country. In addition, our review of a qualitative survey conducted of workers who manage these facilities found that facility management and operation of institute of science and technology were measurably better than that of other universities. However, we believe that institute of science and technology should focus on systematic and efficient management and operation of their facilities to provide an appropriate educational and research environment that nurtures national talent in science and technology. We therefore suggest the need for larger investment in university-supporting facilities, securement of increased facility management manpower and budgets, Progressive return to direct facility management and operation by universities, aggressive introduction of a computerized management system for spaces and facilities, and establishment of an integrated safety management organization, among other measures to more effectively manage and operate facilities.

과학기술특성화대학 시설관리의 정량적인 현황자료를 조사·분석한 결과 학생 1인당 교지면적과 건물연면적 등의 시설현황 확보율이 전국대학 전체평균 보다 높은 것을 나타났다. 또한 시설관리 종사자를 대상으로 정성적인 설문 조사를 검토한 결과 시설 관리·운영 또한 일반대학 보다 일정 수준 이상으로 진단되었다. 그러나 국가 차원의 과학기술 영재 육성을 위한 연구중심 특수대학 설립 취지에 부합되는 교육·연구 환경 조성을 위하여 체계적이고 효율적인 시설 관리· 운영 방식으로 변호되어야 한다고 생각한다. 따라서 보다 효율적인 시설 관리· 운영을 위해서는 대학 지원시설에 대한 시설투자 확대, 시설관리 인력 및 예산의 증액 확보, 시설 관리·운영을 대학 직영화로 점진적인 환원, 전산화된 공간관리 및 시설관리 시스템 적극 도입, 통합 안전관리 조직 구축 등이 필요함을 제시한다.
