Research on Korean video art in the 2000s is important both in terms of the history of art and that of video art in Korea. Examining the 2000s, the period when ‘digital media art’ emerged, through the perspective of ‘post-digital media art’ can propose important issues in discussion of diverse forms of digital art in Korea that can be produced in the ‘post-digital media era.’ This paper focuses on Korean digital video art in the digital media era in the 2000s, attempting to find the art historical implications of the period. There are three reasons this particular period is assumed to be a digital media era. First, Korean digital video art emerged. examining the period provides an opportunity to survey the development of Korean video art until the point at which it employs post-digital visual media storage and the birth of net art. Third, it enables us to discuss the particular characteristics of Korean digital media art, which shows a tendency to be a post-genre in that it has developed independently.

2000년대 한국 디지털 비디오아트에 대한 연구는 한국 현대미술사나 영상예술사에서도 중요한 과제가 아닐 수 없다. ‘포스트 디지털 매체 시대’의 시점에서 ‘디지털 매체 예술’이 표면화하기 시작한 2000년대를 살펴보는 것은 ‘포스트 디지털 매체 시대’에 도출될 수 있는 한국의 다양한 디지털 예술 형태를 논의하는데 중요한 논점들을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것으로 보기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 특히 2000년대 디지털 매체 시대의 한국 디지털 비디오아트에 초점을 맞춰 당시의 예술사적 의미를 모색해 보려한다. 2000년대를 한국적 디지털 매체 시대로 가정하고 이 시기에 제작된 한국 작품들의 경향들을 분석하고자 하는 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다양한 디지털 비디오예술 축제와 디지털 비디오아트의 등장, 둘째, 한국 포스트 디지털 영상 매체 저장 장치까지의 전개과정과 넷 아트의 태동을 한국 작품들과 함께 함께 살펴볼 수 있다는 점, 셋째, 독자적으로 모색된 한국 디지털미디어아트의 탈장르성을 논의할 수 있기 때문이다.
