The purpose of this study is to investigate the Hyojong’s reading career in the Gyeongyeon(經筵) of Joseon Dynasty. To investigate the Silrog (the book which records the history of Korea), it knew the reading material, a reading act and attitude which he read in the Crown prince time. Major findings are as the follows; The reading materials that he read for 10 years were 5 titles, that is, Jungyong(中庸), Seogyeong(書經), Sigyeong(詩經), Simgyeon(心經) and Daehagyeonui(大學衍義). The number of times that he participated to the Jogang’s reading discussion was 20, and the Jugang(晝講) was 384, Seoggang(夕講) was 40, Yadae(夜對) and Sodae(召對) was 75. He was the king who disliked reading, from 1649 to 1659, when he was in power, moreover he was not almost presented at the reading discussion of the Gyeongyeon(經筵) at the end of seizure of power. As a result, Hyojong’s reading career was much lower than the late king’s reading career.

본 연구에서는 조선조 17대 왕 孝宗의 讀書歷을 파악하기 위하여 實錄을 통해 재위 10년간 그의 독서행태를 일정별로 분석하였다. 효종은 인조가 죽자 31세에 왕위에 올라 모든 제도를 재정비한 뒤 경연제도에 따라 3講을 실시하였다. 그러나 체계적인 3講은 실시하지 못하고 간간히 晝講과 召對에 치중하였다. 父王인 仁祖와 마찬가지로 독서에 관심이 없었다. 재위 10년간 읽었던 책은 『大學衍義』, 『中庸』, 『書傳』, 『詩傳』, 『心經』 등 5책이 전부였다. 더구나 『大學衍義』는 夕講이나 夜對를 거의 하지 않아 완독하지 못했다. 독서회수는 朝講 20, 晝講 384, 夕講 40회, 夜對 및 召對 75회로 나타났다. 재위 8년 이후부터는 3講을 실시하지 않고 召對만 실시하였다. 그 원인은 국내문제, 국외문제도 있었으나 성격상의 문제 등으로 경연관을 기피하는 데 있었다. 孝宗 역시 父王에 이어 최하위의 讀書歷을 나타냈다.
