Monk Eungsong Park Younghee(1893∼1990) lived passionate life through the age of modern Korean Buddhism. He engaged in a righteous army in 1909, and soon entered the Buddhist order at Daeheungsa-temple. His Buddhistic basement was made by Chinese classics in young age and regular Buddhism course in Daeheungsa. In 1914, he went to Seoul suupported by scholarship, to study modern Buddhism at Jungang Haknim. In 1919, he took part in the 3・1 Independence movement actively. In 1920, he went to Machuria to enter Sinheung Mugwan Hakgyo. After graduated that school, he became a military officer, and injured at the combat with Japanese army. After that incident, he returned Daeheungsa and married. In 1928, he reentered Bulgyo Jeonsu Hakgyo. Since then he participated in young Buddhist movement, and enterd in Mandang, a secret society, in 1930. After Mandang break up, he became the secretary of Joseon Bulgyo Cheongnyeon Dongmaeng. He was the head of Daeheungsa-temple between 1937 and 1945. At the Chinese-Japan War, Japan the colonial forced to Korean people to praying and contributing donation to Japan, and change Korean name to Japanese. Park Younghee, as a provincial leader of Korean Buddhism, unavoidably adapted to these Japanese colonial policy. He took part in Buddhist and political career since 1945. He drawed from Daeheungsa because of ‘purification of Korean Buddhism’. After he opened Baekhwaam at entrance of Daeheungsa, he devoted himself to tea and Zen. Monk Eungsong selected to scholarship student to learn modern Buddhism in Seoul. On the one hand he learned modern Buddhism, on the other he took part in struggle for independence. He should give up to be a Buddhist scholar or religionist. He passionately endeavored to struggle for independence and Buddhist youth movement. At last time of Japanese colonial, he adapted to these Japanese colonial policy. He left regrets st this point. Late times, Monk Eungsong lived in tea and Zen which were united one. He thought that all the things are equal to Zen. Eating, drinking tea, gardening flowers and enjoying the natural environment are all equal, and he thought that is just Zen. He excavated Dongdasong, wrote by monk Choeui. He made green tea according to the teaching of Choeui. Late lives of Monk Eungsong were presented by tea which practicing Zen. These lives shows his whole fragrence of Buddhism.

응송(應松) 박영희(朴暎熙, 1893∼1990)는 근대 한국불교의 가장 중요한 길목을 두루 거치며 열정적인 생애를 산 인물이다. 1909년에 의병군에 투신하였고 이내 대흥사로 출가하였다. 어려서 한학을 익힌 토대 위에 대흥사 강원에서 원응계정(圓應戒正)에게서 사교과를 이수하여 교학의 토대를 굳건히 마련할 수 있었다. 능력을 인정받아 대흥사 종비생으로 뽑혀 1914년 서울에 유학하게 되었고, 불교중앙학림에 입학하여 근대적인 불교학을 공부하였다. 재학 중인 1919년에 일어난 기미만세운동에 적극 참여하였고, 1920년에는 만주의 신흥무관학교를 마치고 장교가 되어 일본군과의 전투에서 부상을 입고 대흥사로 돌아왔다. 만세운동 중에 입은 부상을 치료해주던 이부숭과 1920년에 혼인하여 대처승이 되었고, 대흥사 학교에서 오랫동안 학생들을 가르쳤다. 1928년에 다시 서울의 불교전수학교에 입학하여 공부를 심화하며 불교 청년운동에 적극 가담하여 1930년에 비밀결사 만당(卍黨)에 가입하여 활동하였고, 만당이 와해되자 조선불교청년동맹의 서기장으로 활약했다. 1937년 취임한 이래 광복에 이르기까지 대흥사 주지로 활동하였다. 중일전쟁 체제하에서 본산들을 앞세워 기도법요와 성금 납부, 창씨개명 등을 강요했던 일제 불교 정책하에서 대흥사 주지직의 응송의 활동 또한 이 제약에 구속될 수밖에 수 없었다. 광복 이후에도 서울에서 교단 활동과 정치 활동을 병행했고, 한국전쟁 이후 다시 대흥사에 내려와 1957년에는 주지도 지냈다. 불교 정화운동 과정에서 대흥사에서 밀려나온 이후 입구에 백화암을 창건하고 만년을 차와 선 수행에 정진하였다. 응송은 근대를 맞은 불교계가 희망했던 인재 양성의 혜택을 받아 종비생으로 서울에 유학하여 근대 불교 교육을 받았다. 응송은 출가 이전부터 몸을 담았던 독립투쟁에 투신하여, 불교학자나 대중 교화의 길을 걸을 수 없었다. 청년 시절 응송은 만당과 청년불교 활동에 더욱 힘을 쏟았다. 일제의 불교정책으로 청년운동의 추동력이 크게 떨어졌고, 응송은 1937년부터 대흥사 주지를 맡아 일제의 불교정책에 순응하는 본산체제에 편입되었다. 현상적으로 일제 통치에 순응했던 행적이 스님 생애의 아쉬운 자취이다. 만년에 응송은 선과 차가 하나되는 다선일여(茶禪一如)의 삶을 살았다. 응송은 세상 삼라만상이 선 아닌 것 없다는 선관을 지녔고, 밥 먹고 차 마시고 화초를 심고 달빛과 흰구름과 자연과 하나되는 삶이 선의 경지라고 보았다. 그가 읊은 여러 시에서도 이와 같은 선지(禪旨)를 찾아볼 수 있다. 응송은 전통 강원을 수료하고 불교전수학교와 중앙학림에서 거듭 근대 불교 교육을 받아 익힌 굳건한 교학적 기반을 토대로 초의선사가 지은 『동다송(東茶頌)』을 널리 알렸다. 그는 또 초의선사의 가르침대로 차를 채취하고 차를 만들어 다맥(茶脈)이 이어지도록 하였다. 응송의 만년의 삶은 실생활에서 살아있는 선을 차로 실천한 것이었고, 이 삶의 자취가 그의 불교적 향취를 가장 온전하게 전해준다.
