The paper's first aim is to introduce to the Korean academic the unpublished handwritten English translation "Hong Kil-tong Chun" located in James Scarth Gale Papers, a collection of the Thomas Fischer Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto in Canada. The second aim is to confirm its source text. The third aim is to investigate Gale's translation practices on the comparison of the source text and Allen's “Hong Kil Tong”. The 23-chapter version and the 21-chapter version published in Seoul are very similar in their contents and length. The former can be said to be the source text of Gale's Hong Kil-tong in that Gale's memo about numbers in his handwritten paper exactly corresponds with the chapter and line of 23-chapter version. Gale's translation, however, reflects the 21-chapter version in detailed contents more than 23-chapter version. Gale also sent to the Library of Congress of America the 21-chapter Hong Kil-tong Chun on the cover of which Gale wrote about the information of his handwritten Hong Kil-tong. For the present it can be said that both 21 and 23 chapter version were used as source texts for Gale. Allen's reduction, expansion, or omission of the source text is remarkable when we compared his Hong Kil-tong Chun with Gale's. He translates liberally to give information about Korean culture. Allen omits the topic of Yuldo state completely. Allen's adaptation reflects his translation object about which he announced in the Preface of Korean Tales. Gale's translation is on the whole literal translation and he tries to translate words, phases, and sentences of the source text literally. Gale, however, omits the consummation of the minister Hong and his maid servant, that is, Kil-tong mother. Gale consistently omitted the sexual and abusive expressions in other translations like "Choon yang". This omission in Hong Kil-tong is in line with his overall translation practices. Except that Gale translated Hong Kil-tong Chun line by line and word by word.

본고의 목적은 캐나다 토론대 토마스피셔 희귀본장서실 『게일유고』 소재 미간행 육필 <홍길동전> 영역본의 원문과 그에 대한 우리의 재구본을 학계에 소개하며 이에 대한 해제를 제공하는 것이다. 게일의 <홍길동전> 영역본을 경판계열 이본들과 대비 작업을 수행해보면, 번역저본일 가능성이 높은 판본은 <경판21장본>과 <경판23장본>이다. 게일의 영역본에 남겨놓은 숫자는 <경판23장본>의 장수와 행수와 정확히 일치한다. 그럼에도 <경판21장본>을 배제할 수 없는 이유는 첫째, 후반부의 몇몇 특정 번역문에서 <경판21장본>에 더 유사한 모습을 보여주기 때문이며, 둘째, 게일이 미의회도서관에 보낸 판본이 <경판21장본>이고, 이 책의 표지 위의 메모는 게일의 『일지』 18권의 육필 <홍길동전> 영역본의 서지사항과 일치하기 때문이다. 더불어 게일의 <홍길동전> 영역본을 알렌의 <홍길동전> 영역본과 대비 검토함으로 그 번역특징을 살폈다. 게일은 <홍길동전>을 한 편의 문학작품으로 인식하여 홍길동의 일대기 전반을 충실하게 완역했다. 이러한 그의 번역양상은 알렌이 <홍길동전>에서 한국의 적서차별 제도의 부당함에서 학대받는 길동에 초점을 맞추어 율도국 이후의 화소를 최대한 생략하며 저본을 축소, 확대, 누락하는 모습과는 선명히 대비된다.
