Trot is the first mainstream genre in Korean popular music history and its type was established under the influence of Japanese popular music in the mid thirties. During 80 years trot has been expanded and changed several times, and a result of the first expansion around 1940 was ‘major trot’. Musical essence of typical trot is the Japanese pentatonic minor scale that exclude the fourth and seven notes, but major trot is done in pentatonic major scale. Such expansion was carried out on the effects of Japanese popular music, dochumono. But tale about yakuza, main subject matter of dochumono was not accepted in major trot because of Korean people’s choice. In the 1950s major trot grew more and its subject matter was transformed into Korean style. That was the gosa gayo, song of the tales familiar to the Korean people, and it formed a big trend. There were other factors in the appearance of the gosa gayo, but the most important cause was expansion of major trot influenced by dochumono.

한국 대중음악 역사에서 첫 번째로 거론할 수 있는 주류 장르인 ‘트로트’는 1930년대 중반에 일본 대중음악의 영향을 받아 양식의 전형이 확립되었다. 이후 80년 동안 전개된 ‘트로트’의 역사에 는 몇 가지 확장과 변질의 전환점이 있었는데, 1940년 무렵에는 첫 번째 확장의 결과로 ‘장조 트로트’ 가 등장했다. 제4·7음이 배제된 일본식 5음 단음계가 음악적 핵심이었던 전형적인 ‘트로트’와 달리 ‘장조 트로트’는 5음 장음계로 이루어졌다. ‘트로트’의 형성 자체가 이미 일본 대중음악의 영향을 직접 받은 것이었지만, 이러한 장조화 확장 또한 일본 도추모노의 영향을 받아 구체화되었다. 다만 도추모노의 수용에는 당연히 한국 대중의 선택이 개입되었으므로, 도추모노의 주요 소재인 야쿠자 관련 서사적 내용은 ‘장조 트로트’에 당장 반영되지 못했다. 이후 1950년대에 ‘장조 트로트’의 비중이 좀 더 높아지면서 소재의 한국적 변용이 이루어졌고, 그것이 대중에게 친숙한 이야기를 담은 고사 가요라는 형태로 일대 유행을 이루기도 했다. 고사 가요의 등장 배경에 다른 요인도 없지는 않지만, 도추모노에서 영향을 받은 ‘장조 트로트’의 확대가 가장 중요한 이유라고 할 수 있다.
