During the late 70s and early 80s, Korea underwent rapid change not just on the political scene but also in terms of culture. As such, the field of Korean traditional music also saw a quantitative expansion to appeal to the masses without a clear direction on how to improve the quality. This paper is a form of retrospective essay on the initiatives to make Gukak(Korean traditional music) more mainstream. The initiatives of the 70s are reviewed in terms of increasing the supply of Gukak, while the initiatives of the 80s are reviewed from the perspective of making Gukak more mainstream. The efforts to make Gukak more mainstream concerted by many in the field including myself were carried out in an attempt to shed light on new possibilities for the field, and took a two-pronged approach of increasing the supply of Gukak but also refining the aesthetic aspects of it. However, the discourse on making Gukak more mainstream started then still continues to this day. Compared to the massive increase in quantity, no clear vision or identification of issues has been provided. Making Gukak mainstream still goes on, regardless of the musical content. Such programs should continue as part of discovering value in addition to something that must be done. It is time now to review whether the type of approach we are taking to making Gukak more mainstream is indeed the right approach, while moving away from simple disputes over the methodology of making it mainstream.

70년대 말과 80년대 초, 정치적 사건 뿐 아니라 우리의 문화적 경향도 변화를 맞고 있었으며, 이에 따라 국악계도 국악 발전을 위한 특별한 방책 없이 대중화를 위한 공연들이 양적으로 팽창되었 다. 이글은 필자의 국악대중화작업과 그 작품에 대한 일종의 회고라 할 수 있으며, 70년대 작업을 ‘국악보급’ 차원에서 되돌아보고 80년대 작업을 ‘국악대중화’라는 시각에서 접근하고자 하였다. 필자를 중심으로 한 이 시기의 국악대중화 작업은 국악의 새로운 영역을 개척하고 새로운 가능성을 타진하기 위한 작업으로, 국악의 보급화와 창작을 통한 예술화를 동시에 지향해 왔다. 그러나 그 당시의 국악대중화 문제에 관한 논의는 30여년이 지난 지금까지도 계속되고 있으며, 실제로 현재 국악계는 공연의 양적인 팽창에 비해 음악계에 비전과 이슈를 만들어 내지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 국악대중화는 음악적 내용에 관계없이 오늘도 치열하게 전개되고 있으며, 앞으로 국악의 대중 화 논의는 당위적 시도 차원을 넘어선 가치적 모색의 차원으로 계속되어야 하겠다. 지금은 대중화 의 방법론의 논쟁에서 벗어나 ‘어떤 대중화’가 바람직한 것인지의 방향성에 접근하여 지나온 시기 에 대한 반성적 점검과 더불어 진정한 가치를 되찾아야 할 시기이다.
