The DB Construction Based on the Records of Susinsa (Joseon’s Envoys Sent to Japan in the Late 19th Century) is a research project designed to collect various types of materials related to Susinsa during the Joseon Dynasty, translate and interpret the contents of the materials, and build a comprehensive database. This project deserves to be recognized as part of digital humanities, as it involves the construction of a digital database of diverse information and knowledge obtained from the processes of collection, translation, and interpretation of all the relevant materials. This project has two significant implications with regard to its digital nature. First, this project demonstrates the outstanding differences between traditional and digital humanities in terms of the way research is conducted. This project is based on a research group’s collective work instead of an individual’s research results as is common in many traditional humanities research studies. Moreover, not only the research results, the research procedures are also treated as a significant element in this digital research approach. In short, this research approach faithfully follows the basic tenets of digital humanities studies that place more focus on processes than results and value collective rather than individual research efforts. Second, this research has actively explored the following issues: What significance does database construction have in digital humanities? How should contents visualization and database construction be integrated intimately? Currently, the Korean government concentrates on the support of “visualization – realization of digital contents” when it comes to the country’s national digital humanities projects. This approach leaves room for misunderstanding, i.e., digital humanities studies get involved only in the production of visualized materials. Note, however, that significant visualized materials can only be produced from throughly designed databases. Thus, this project seeks to design and build a complete database. Meanwhile, such new research and database construction directions could be discerned from the perspectives of traditional humanities studies, too. This is because digital humanities studies are not inherently different from traditional humanities studies; the former is merely an extension of the latter in the digital age.

‘修信使 자료 DB 편찬 프로젝트’는 수신사와 관련된 여러 유형의 자료를 수집하고, 각 자료가 지닌 내용을 번역･해석한 뒤 이를 토대로 종합적인 DB를 구축하고자 하는 연구이다. 본 프로젝트는, 자료를 수집･번역･연구하고 동시에 그로부터 생겨나는 여러 정보와 지식을 디지털 환경에서 효과적인 DB로 구축해야 하는 작업이기에, 디지털 인문학 연구의 일환으로 이해할 여지가 크다. 디지털 인문학 연구로서 본 프로젝트를 수용할 경우 2가지 차원에서 그 시사점을 짚어볼 수 있다. 첫 번째는, 기존 인문학 연구수행 방식과는 다른 디지털 인문학 연구수행 방식의 특징이 본 프로젝트에 반영되어 있다는 사실이다. 본 프로젝트의 경우 기존 인문학 연구에서 통용되던 개인 중심의 단독적 연구를 벗어나 연구 집단 내에서의 적극적인 협업 체제가 적용되고 있으며, 연구결과물과 별개로 연구 수행 가운데 이루어지는 연구절차 또한 중요한 연구 요소로서 수용되고 있다. 결과보다는 과정에 집중하고, 개인보다는 집단 연구를 지향하는 디지털 인문학 연구의 기본 방향을 따르고 있는 것이다. 두 번째는, 디지털 인문학의 영역에서 DB 구축이 갖는 의미가 무엇이며, 그 연장선상에서 시각화 콘텐츠 구현과 DB 구축이 어떠한 차원에서 유기적으로 연결되어야 할 것인가에 대한 고민이 본 프로젝트에서 능동적으로 이루어지고 있다는 사실이다. 현재 국가적 차원에서 지원되고 있는 디지털 인문학 관련 사업의 경우 ‘시각화, 디지털 콘텐츠 구현’ 요소에 치중하고 있다. 이로 인해 시각화 결과물을 구현하는 것만이 디지털 인문학 연구에 해당되는 것이라고 오해할 여지가 크다. 그러나 의미 있는 시각화 결과물을 구현하기 위해서는 그러한 결과물이 가능할 수 있게끔 치밀하게 설계된 DB가 전제되어야 하며, 본 프로젝트는 그와 같은 맥락에서 DB 설계 및 구축을 시도하고 있는 중이다. 이와 같은 연구 수행 방향과 DB편찬 방향은 기존 인문학의 연구방법론에 근거하여 이해할 여지가 있다. 이는 곧 디지털 인문학 연구가 기존 인문학 연구와 그 성격이 다른 것이 아니라 오히려 기존 인문학 연구의 연장선상에서 수용･이해되어야 할 연구 영역임을 의미한다.
