This paper is to examine different conceptions of the ‘political correctness’ and its scope of debate. It was a fairly recent phenomenon that the concept of political correctness became an issue between conservatives and liberals. The concept was first used as implying a staunch loyalty to the party line by the left Leninist. Then, in the 70’s, the New Left began to use the concept self-critically or ironically, to ward off the inflexibility of their own creeds. Against the liberal promulgation of diversity and multiculturalism as social justice in the early 80’s, the conservatives began to use the word ‘political correctness’ pejoratively, to attack liberalism as a biased ideology. Supporters of PC used in turn the word to criticize the hegemony of mainstream conservatives as anti-PC supporters. The conceptions of ‘political correction’ have thus taken different shapes in different contexts, in response to social changes and according to different ideologies of conservativism and liberalism. The debates on PC between liberals and conservatives cover broadly multicultural issues such as the canon, speech codes, curriculum, affirmative action, biased words, sexual harrassment and date crime, identity politics, and so on.

본 논문의 목적은 ‘정치적 올바름’의 개념과 논쟁 범위를 검토하는 데 있다. ‘정치적 올바름’ 개념이 오늘날처럼 소수자집단과 주류집단 사이의 논쟁적인 의미로 사용되기 시작한 것은 그다지 오래되지 않았다. 처음에 이 용어는 레닌 좌파들이 자신들의 노선과 관련하여 긍정적인 의미로 사용되다가 1970년대에 이르러 좌파들 사이에서 자신들의 과격함을 아이러닉하게 표현하는 의미로 사용되었다. 이러한 가운데 1980년대 초반에 이르러 진보주의자들이 주장한 다문화주의·다양성 개념은 사회적 정의의 의미로 받아들여지게 되었다. 이에 보수주의자들은 ‘정치적 올바름’이 사회적 정의가 아니라 주류집단의 이데올로기와 마찬가지로 특정 소수자집단의 이데올로기와 같은 것이라고 비난하면서 이 용어를 사용하기 시작하였다. 그러나 그 후 PC지지자들은 anti-PC지지자와의 논쟁 과정에 주류집단의 헤게모니를 비판하는 의미로 이 용어를 사용하면서 또 다른 의미로 인식되기 시작하였다. 이처럼 ‘정치적 올바름’이란 용어는 사회변화와 진보, 보수라는 사회적 시각에 따라 의미가 추가되거나 새로운 의미로 끊임없이 변화하고 있다. 이러한 변화와 더불어 ‘정치적 올바름’의 논쟁 범위는 다문화주의를 둘러싼 진보와 보수 사이에 제기된 정전, 스피치코드, 커리큘럼, 소수자우대정책, 편향적 단어, 성희롱과 데이트 폭력, 정체성 등의 여러 이슈를 포함하고 있다.
