This article describes the discrimination and phobia against Nicaraguan migrants that reside in Costa Rica. During the last few decades of the 20th century, the number of Nicaragua natives that migrated to Costa Rica drastically increased. In general, it was stated that this phenomenon was caused by the complex political situation and the vulnerable economy of the time period. This article not only focuses on the factors that pushed Nicaraguans to Costa Rica, but also on the internal factors of Costa Rica such as the country´s need of a Nicaraguan migrant labor force due to the country´s economic structural change during the 80s and 90s. Beyond this, the article also analyzes the reasons for which xenophobia towards Nicaraguan migrants was generated, which I have defined as Nicaphobia, giving a great importance to the concepts of “exceptionalism” and “valley centralism”.

본 논문은 코스타리카 내 니카라과 이주자들에 대한 혐오를 다룬다. 20세기 말 코스타리카 내 니카라과 이주자 숫자는 기형적이라 할 만큼 급격히 증가하였고 사회 전반적으로 이들에대한 혐오가 공고화되었다. 일반적으로 니카라과 이주민 급증과 관련한 코스타리카 사회 내 지배적 시선은 니카라과측 배출요인에 집중된다. 구체적으로 20세기 후반 니카라과 내 정치적 혼란과 경제적 불안정이 대표적이다. 그러나 본 논문은 니카라과로부터 기인한 배출요인을 고려함과 동시에 동시대 코스타리카 산업구조 다각화와 농업구조 변화 등과 같은 코스타리카측 흡인요인에도 초점을 맞춘다. 나아가 코스타리카 사회 내 니카포비아의 일반적 원인으로 주목되는 고용 박탈과 사회보장 악화에 대한 사회적 우려의 오류를 설명하고 코스타리카의 국가적 정체성이라 할 수 있는 ‘예외주의’와 ‘중앙고원주의’를 중심으로 니카포비아 원인을 분석한다.
