The Impacts of Elementary School Students’ Mobile Game Addiction on School Adjustment & Academic Achievement : The Moderating Effect of Empathy

The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of mobile game addiction among elementary school students on their school adjustment and academic achievement as well as to investigate the moderating effects of empathy over these impacts. In this study, 428 4-6th elementary school students in capital area were surveyed about their mobile game addiction, empathy level, school adjustment and academic achievement. Results were as followings. First, the levels of mobile game addiction for male and/or 6th grade students were more serious than those of female and/or 4th & 5th grade students. Second, significant negative impacts of elementary school students’ mobile game addiction on their school adjustment and academic achievement were verified. Third, the empathy exhibited significant moderating effects over the negative impacts of mobile game addiction on the academic achievement, while there was no moderating effect over those on the school adjustment. This result confirms that empathy among elementary school students has a moderating effect to reduce the negative impacts of mobile game addiction on their academic achievement.
