The purpose of this paper is to research how the musical film Chicago succeed to the tradition of Hollywood musical film and renovate it. The film was adapted from the stage musical Chicago premiered in 1975 and succeed to the tradition of backstage musical film through making backstage member the heroine of film and coming true her dream at last. The film also succeed to the tradition of integrate musical film through coherence of between narrative and dance. This aspect can be found at the part of crossing editing between fantastic performance and real world. In addition, the film has several characteristics such as using star system just like early musical films, making mirror shots, and succeeding to the method of cinematography invented by Busby Berkeley. Busby Berkeley’s method was frequent moving cameras, mainly using long shots and long takes. On the other hand, the film renovated the tradition of Hollywood musical film through applying various shots and rapid scene exchange, wearing unexpected costumes, exposing women bodies, importing puppet dance and ridiculous clown dance. This renovation is aimed to the taste of contemporary audience.
