This article aims at reviewing public functions of preaching for the church and audiences who live in the age of rapid changes. Until now, preaching has been considered in passive perspective for its role within pulpit. However, the public role of preaching may be far larger and broader. Its reason is that the lives of audiences who listen to the words and go forward world are directly affected by preaching. When so many prophets in the Bible delivered wholly the words of God, people transformed and then the entire society recovered, as we have seen. This article, firstly, with perspective of public theology based on Ad Hoc correlation theology, figures out public functions of mission of preaching, and then studies today's problems seen in David F. Wells' view, with post modern perspective. The article also analyzes negative influences of social phenomena such as disorders in society with severance of relationships due to individualism and dissolution of families, spreading of wrong mysticism, and loss of right Christian ethical view. In order to overcome them, then, the article seeks public functions of preaching and its specific necessities. For public functions of preaching and suggestions of its specific alternatives, based on Charles L. Campbell's building churches as community of witness and practice for strengthening ethicality of preaching, William Stringfellow's Biblical insights and understanding on spiritual entities of worldly power, and Stanley Hauerwas' Bible narrative theory, the article tries to seek the role of public preaching and its alternatives.

본 논문의 목적은 시대적 격변기를 살아가고 있는 교회와 회중들을 위한 설교의 공적 기능에 대한 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 지금까지 설교에 대한 인식은 강단 위에서만 행해지는 제한된 사역으로 소극적인 측면에서만 이해되어 왔다. 하지만 말씀을 듣고 세상 속에서 실천적 삶을 살아가는 회중들의 삶의 실현을 위한 기초라고 하는 실제적인 측면에서 설교가 차지하는 공적 역할은 훨씬 더 크고 광범위 할 수 있다. 말씀을 듣고 세상을 향해 나아가는 회중들의 삶은 설교를 통해서 직접적으로 영향을 받을 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 성경의 많은 예언자들이 하나님의 말씀을 온전히 전하였을 때 실제로 사람들이 변화되고, 이로 인하여 사회 전체가 회복되는 것을 우리는 보아서 알고 있다. 때문에 설교의 공적 기능과 역할의 가능성에 대한 연구는 의미가 있는 작업이다. 본 논문은 먼저 Ad Hoc 상관관계 신학에 근거한 공적신학의 측면에서 설교 사역의 공적 기능을 조명하고, 이어서 데이비드 웰즈(David F. Wells)의 시각에서 바라본 오늘의 시대의 문제점들을 포스트모던적인 관점으로 고찰하였다. 개인주의와 가정의 해체로 인한 관계의 단절과 개인의 고립화, 그릇된 신비주의의 확산으로 인한 두려움의 확산, 올바른 기독교 윤리관의 상실로 인한 사회의 무질서와 같은 현상들이 교회와 성도들에게 미치는 부정적 영향력을 분석하면서 이를 극복하기 위한 노력으로 설교가 감당해야 할 공적 기능이 어떤 것이어야 하는지를 묻고, 그 구체적인 필요성을 모색하였다. 설교의 공적 기능과 구체적인 대안제시를 위해서 챨스 캠벨(Charles L. Campbell)의 증인 공동체로서의 교회 세우기와 설교의 윤리성 강화를 위한 실천, 윌리엄 스트링펠로우(William Stringfellow)의 세상 권세들의 영적실체에 대한 성경적 통찰과 이해, 스탠리 하우워어스(Stanley Hauerwas)의 성경 내러티브 이론을 근거로 해서 오늘 이 시대 가운데 공적 설교로서의 역할과 그 대안을 찾아보고자 하였다.
