As we see in the modern baptismal theology, the whole baptismal ritual cannot be regarded as a death of the previous life, culminating in the Pauline baptismal theology, but separating from the early Syriac tradition. Baptism is always conceived of as a birth, and baptismal water is seen as a womb. And sealing plays a significant role in the early baptismal rites. This study will focus on the relation between baptism and sealing from both sacramental and scriptural point of view. First of all, this thesis will grasp the meaning of sealing from the Old Testament and New Testament, and describe the role of sealing which are placed in each baptismal rites. The range of historical search for this study is limited from the first century to the fifth century. And this study covers early documents from North Africa, Rome, Alexandria in Egypt, Jerusalem, and Antioch/ Edessa in Syria for supportive evidences. Sealing and baptism has had a twofold relation in each traditions since early church baptism began: unity and division. However this dichotomic approach cannot be exactly proved in real contents of documents because early fathers had various and ambiguous opinions regarding baptismal rites per se or baptismal theology. This study will provide the baptismal practice of modern church which has nearly lost spiritual vitality with abundant significance of baptismal sealing in the early church.

본 논문은 기독교 입문 의식의 중심으로 여겨지는 물과 관련된 의식과 그 외의 부가적 의식들로 여겨지는 인침의 표징들의 관계를 다룬다. 먼저 본 논문은 성경에서의 인침의 의미를 알아보고, 인침에 사용되었던 표징들이 초기 교회의 세례 예식들 속에서 어떤 역할을 하는지 알아볼 것이다. 본 논문이 다룰 초기 교회의 시간적 영역은 1세기에서 5세기까지이고, 다룰 자료들은 지역적으로 북아프리카, 로마, 알렉산드리아, 예루살렘 그리고 시리아의 안디옥과 에데사에 분포된 문서들이다. 비록 완전한 분리는 불가능하지만, 본 논문은 인침과 세례에 대한 관계성을 크게 통일성을 주장하는 전통과 분리를 주장하는 전통으로 나누고, 그 중에서도 통일성이 가진 유익한 점들을 알아볼 것이다. 본 연구가 현대 교회에 공헌할 수 있는 부분은 세례 예식이 가진 입수 외의 다양한 인침 표징들이 가진 풍부한 의미들을 초기 교회의 예식들에서 찾아내고 그 정당성을 확보하는 데 있다. 초기 교회의 세례 예식에서 인침이 보여주는 의미들은 그리스도의 의를 입는 것, 기독교 공동체의 지체가 되는 것, 깨달음을 얻는 것, 하나님의 자녀로 입양되는 것, 그리고 다양한 성령의 선물들을 받는 것 등, 단지 세례의 입수만으로는 전달하기 힘든 성례적 요소들을 보여준다. 현대의 교회들이 성경적이고 전통적인 세례 교육과 예식의 중요성보다는 개 교회 또는 특정 목회프로그램의 입문 과정을 더 중요시하는 현실에서 본 연구가 초기 교회의 영성을 회복하는데 도움을 줄 것이다.
