In the 1950s, an exploration of the specific meanings of the concept 'freedom' was performed in the Korean society, and it was understood as humans' autonomy and independence. But its concept that was actually used among the public who used the same language (言衆) then was more equivocal and complex. In the early part of the novel 'Madame Freedom', widely read then, freedom is used as the concept that indicates unstability or deviation needing control. Its concept negatively distorted in that way is depicted along with the immorality and fall of the female character Oh Seon Yeong. Incidentally, as it gets into the later part of the novel, a new meaning is provided to the term. The male character Jang Tae Yeon also pursues it, and his pursuit of it is depicted as rational and logical work unlike Oh Seon Yeong's pursuit of it. He is presented as an alternative existence that admonishes her and leads her to a right path, and its concept he pursues is also idealized (理想化). But in his definition of it, the dictionary definition and fundamental meaning of its concept, that is a doubt about irrationality that oppresses autonomy, is omitted. As a result, its concept shown in the novel only indicates one kind of freedom that has ended up becoming part of the system, that is 'the freedom to adapt oneself to the system'.

1950년대에 이르러 한국 사회에서 ‘자유’ 개념에 대한 구체적인 의미 탐 구가 이루어졌는데 그것은 인간의 자율성, 주체성으로 이해되었다. 그러 나 당대 언중(言衆)에게 실제로 통용되었던 ‘자유’ 개념은 보다 이중적이고 복합적이었다. 당대 널리 읽혔던 소설 『자유 부인』의 초반부에서 ‘자유’는 통제가 필 요한 불안정함이나 일탈을 가리키는 개념으로 사용되고 있다. 이와 같이 부정적으로 왜곡된 ‘자유’ 개념은 여성 인물 오선영의 비도덕성, 추락과 함께 묘사된다. 한편 소설의 후반부로 갈수록 ‘자유’에는 새로운 의미가 부여된다. 남성 인물 장태연 역시 ‘자유’를 추구하는데 그것은 오선영에게 서와는 달리 이성적이고 논리적인 작업으로 묘사된다. 장태연은 오선영을 훈계하고 올바른 길로 이끄는 대안적 존재로 제시되며 그가 추구하는 ‘자 유’ 개념 역시 이상화(理想化)된다. 그러나 장태연의 ‘자유’에는 그 개념의 사전적이고 근본적 의미, 즉 자율성을 억압하는 불합리에 대한 의문이 생 략되어 있다. 그 결과 이 소설에서 나타나는 ‘자유’ 개념은 체제 안으로 수 렴되어버린 자유, 즉 ‘체제에 순응할 자유’만을 가리키게 된다.
