This article examines the significance and art educational value of irrationality that has been neglected in the school curriculum setting a high value on rationalism. We are not only rational but also irrational. Irrational part including perception of death, anxiety and ennui comprises a large proportion of human nature, as much as rational part including will to live, stability and hope. As schools neglect the contents about negative emotions, ugliness and death being excluded from the rationalism, students would misunderstand and have a prejudice about our world. From the view of rationality and rationalism, matters of negative emotions, ugliness and death belong to the irrationality which is unproductive and useless. But they exist in human reality. So it is necessary for irrationality, as a part of human nature, to enter the category of education. Art is very relevant to irrational part and it will play an important role in the educational acceptance of irrationality. If acceptance of irrationality in art education makes students expand their thoughts, understanding of human and world, express themselves as they are, communicate with, and relate to others, it would be meaningful and valuable to both of students and teachers.

이 논문은 기존의 교육과정에서 소외되어 온 비이성의 의미에 대해 논하고 그것이 가지는 미술 교육 적 가치에 대해 살펴보고자 하는 글이다. 인간은 이성적인 동시에 비이성적인 존재이며 비이성적인 측면은 이성적인 측면과 마찬가지로 인간의 삶 속에서 적지 않은 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이성과 합리 주의를 지향하는 교육과정 안에서 충동적이고 어두운 감정에 관련된 것들은 제대로 다루어지지 않는 다. 이러한 내용은 이성적 혹은 합리적 관점에서 비생산적이거나 유해한 것으로 간주되지만, 인간의 삶에 존재하는 여러 문제들의 일부이며 예술적으로 유의미한 가치를 지닌 것들이다. 그러므로 인간과 예술에 대한 이해를 넓히고 우리 자신에 대한 앎에 다가서기 위해, 비이성적인 측면들 또한 교육의 영 역 안으로 들여와야 하지 않을까 생각하였다. 따라서 이 글에서는 죽음, 광기와 우울, 폭력성과 야만 성, 저항과 불만의 욕구 같은 비이성적인 측면이 예술과 어떤 관련을 가지는지 살펴보고, 이들의 미술 교육적 가치를 밝히고자 한다. 비이성의 수용을 통해 학생들이 미술교육 안에서 자신의 다양한 감정 을 죄책감 없이 표현하고 타인의 감정을 폭넓게 이해할 수 있게 된다면, 그것은 학생과 교사 모두에게 의미 있는 일이 될 것이다.
