The theme of Chapter 1 is agreement of the convergence of the results of three research methodologies. The following three surveys indicated the same tendency, thus mutually reinforcing overall reliability. (1) The Japanese language landscape pictures and the multi󰠏lingual signboards seen overseas indicated a geographical proximity effect. (2) The international census in the form of an opinion poll indicated the same tendency. (3) Several kinds of Google search techniques again offered the same results. Japanese is the 2nd or the 3rd language in Asia, and the 7th or 8th language in Europe. However, we should not be misled by surface patterns, and we must know the deep structure. In Chapter 2 the global and Japanese local geographical distribution of linguistic landscape will be considered, making use of brightness at night as a clue.

本稿第１章のテーマは三つの研究手法の一致である。次の三つの調査結果が同じ傾向を示した。お互いに信頼性を高め合っていると考えられる。(１) 言語景観では世界各地で撮った日本語や多言語の写真が、地理的近接効果を示した。(２)国際センサスの世論調査の結果が同じ傾向を示した。(３) インターネットの各種検索技法でも同様の結果が得られた。日本語はアジアでは2番目か３番目の言語で、ヨーロッパではでは7番目、8番目の言語である。ただし表層にまどわされずに、深層を知る必要がある。第２章では夜の明るさを手がかりに言語景観のグローバルなまたローカルな地理的分布について考察する。
