The paper is to review logically issue about cultural studies that have established as a domain of study in Japan On this study, the issue related to media in cultural studies of Japan is included in priority. To review cultural studies formed as academic methodology in academic circles of Japan is needed absolutely to approach Japan study. For the sake of it, this study examined the studies in the theoretical background of Japan cultural studies and also, how practical study is developed based on this. Through this process, the study investigated closely what Japan cultural studies constructs in theoretical context. Expecially, the paper examined the practical study on audience in Japan ,and how they watch TV actively in decoding process of message in media.

본고는 일본에서 학문적 영역으로 자리 잡은 문화연구에 관한 논의들을 이론적으로 검토한 것이다. 본고에서는 일본의 문화연구 내에서도 미디어 관련 논의들을 중점적으로 다루었다. 일본의 학계에서도 학문적인 방법론으로 자리 잡은 문화연구를 검토하는 것은 일본연구의 다양한 접근을 위해서라도 반드시 필요하다고 생각한다. 이를 위해, 본고에서는 일본의 문화연구의 이론적 배경이 된 연구들을 검토하였다. 또한, 이를 바탕으로 한 실증적 연구가 어떻게 전개되었는 지를 살펴 보았다. 이러한 과정을 통해 일본의 문화연구가 어떠한 이론적 맥락을 구축해 왔는지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 특히, 본고에서는 일본의 오디언스 연구에 관한 실증적 연구를 검토하였는데, 이를 통해 일본의 오디언스가 미디어의 메시지에 대한 해독의 과정에서 어떠한 능동적 시청을 행하고 있는지를 고찰하였다.
