The purpose of this paper is to consider the cultural historical and literary meaning of Hwasando published in Korean by Kim Seok Beom. As you can see, Hwasando is a work that describes rampant contradictions/absurdity during the political liberation of Jeju (Jeju 4.3). I think that “Hwasando”, published in Korean, should be recognized for following aspects. First, “Hwasando” is an epic that describes the turbulent liberation of Korea and fills the space of Korea Contemporary Arts history. It is also our self-portrait and mirror- not the subject of political or ideological taboo-and the blooming of Jeju Literature as well as the apex of 4.3 literature.“Hwasando” describes the history, folklore, politics, ideology, social and cultural points of the social, geographical and ecological nature of the Korean peninsula's history in detail. It has characteristics of resistance and exposé literature from a realistic point of view. It also should be noted that it is a work that opens the door to world literature based on borderlessness and pacifism in a universal writing beyond nationalism in Northeast Asia. In addition, “Hwasando” overcomes traditional pure-blood ethnicism that is widespread in Korea/Korean/Korean society and it is very didactic literature that ensures global competitiveness. It is also remarkable that it asks questions of the fundamental nature of human problems such as ethnic identity/transformation of worldview, and the existential anguish of the Korean Japanese. Therefore, “Hwasando” requires more broad spectrum research of the diasporas world view, universality, and literary texts that are deeply related to world literature in terms of borderlessness.

본고의 목적은 한국어판으로 출간된 김석범의 『火山島』가 역사문화사적/문학사적으로 어떤 의미가 있는지를 고찰하는 것이었다. 주지하다시피 『화산도』는 제주도(제주4ㆍ3사건)에 횡행했던 해방정국의 모순/부조리를 문학적으로 형상화한 작품이다. 필자는 이번 한국어판 『화산도』가 다음과 같은 점에서 주목되어야 한다고 생각한다. 먼저『火山島』가 한국현대문학사에서 격동기 해방정국을 형상화한 장편서사로서 한국현대문학사의 공백을 채워주는 텍스트라는 점, 정치ㆍ이념적으로 터부의 대상일 수 없고 우리들의 자화상이자 거울이라는 점, 제주문학의 꽃이며 <4ㆍ3문학>의 정점에 해당한다는 점을 지적하고 싶다. 그리고 『화산도』가 해방정국에 팽배했던 한반도의 역사ㆍ민속, 정치ㆍ이념, 사회ㆍ문화적 지점을 제주도의 생태학적 자연ㆍ지리ㆍ생활을 잘 용해시켜 구체적으로 그려낸다는 점, 현실주의적인 관점에서 역사적 사실을 복원해내며 저항/고발문학의 성격을 띤다는 점, 동북아시아의 국가중심주의를 넘어 월경과 평화주의에 입각한 보편적 글쓰기를 실천한 세계문학의 가능성을 연 작품이라는 사실도 간과될 수 없을 것이다. 또한 『화산도』가 한국/한국인/한국사회에 팽배한 전통적 민족순혈주의를 극복하고 글로벌 경쟁력을 확보하는 데 매우 교훈적인 문학텍스트라는 점, 재일코리안의 자기/민족적 정체성, 세계관의 변용, 실존적 고뇌 등 인간문제의 근원적인 명제까지도 질문을 던지고 있다는 점에서도 주목할 필요가 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 김석범의 대하소설 『화산도』는 월경적(국가와 민족) 차원에서 디아스포라의 세계관, 보편성, 세계문학과 관련이 깊은 문학텍스트로서 좀더 넓은 형태의 연구가 요구된다고 하겠다.
