This thesis is written to study on the novel 『Yeokjo(a crosstide)』by Hong Seong-won in terms of the confrontation. It is a kind of a crime story. But unlike them, it deal with the serious ethical issue in his own particular way. This novel is organized on base of the two oppositional worlds. One is the inside of public order and the other is the outside of public order. By the way unlike the appearance, on the contrary the latter is better than the former ethically. Because although the latter is the world of crime, there is the ethical order in its own way in there. On the other hand the former is the world of corrupt power and parasitic people on the power. In this situation, especially hero/antihero Dusik is the significant character. Because although he is a criminal, he He competes fair and bravely against the depraved society. But he is defeated. There is tragic beauty in his defeat. 『Yeokjo(a crosstide)』is the novel exploring the ethical issue through the confrontation with oneself, others and the corrupt power. It is the novel reflected author's masculine literary feature.

본 논문의 목적은, 『역조』에서 나타나는 대결의 의미를 살펴보고, 홍성원의 문학세계에서이 소설이 어떤 의미를 지니는지 밝히는 데 있다. 『역조』에 등장하는 대결의 전제조건은, 그것이 정정당당한 것이 되어야한다는 점이다. 정정당당하다는 것은 대결의 전제조건이기도 하지만 명예를 지키는 전제조건이 되기도 한다. 정정당당하게 싸워 얻은 ‘멋진 패배’는 그렇지 못한 ‘부당한 승리’보다 더 낫다. 이런 점에서 승리/패배의 의미는 정정당당하게 싸웠느냐 그렇지 않느냐에 따라서 늘 그 의미는 달라질 수있다. 또한 이 소설에서 두식은 타락한 현실과 대립하지만 패배한다. 하지만 그가 누구보다정정당당하게 대결에 임하며 명예를 존중한다는 점에서, 그것은 승리/패배의 양면적 의미를동시에 지닌다. 예정된 패배를 흔쾌히 수락하고 정정당당하게 대결에 임해 죽음을 맞이하는그의 태도에서 비장미가 드러난다. 이러한 비장미는 거칠지만 과감한 행동과 당당하고 굳건한의지로 현실과의 맞서는 두식의 현대적 영웅의 면모에서 비롯된다. 그리고 이 소설은 두식이라는 범죄자의 패륜적 행위를 통해서 윤리의 문제를 극단까지 밀고 나간다. 최가의 아들을 죽이는 패륜적 행위를 저지르면서, 두식은 심각한 윤리적 모순에 직면하게 된다. 두식은 두 번에걸쳐 오현정과 만나 긴 대화를 나눈다. 그것은 오현정을 매개로 윤리적 모순을 극복하고 정신적 상승을 꾀하는 두식의 내부에서 벌어지는 자기 자신과의 대결이다. 오현정은 보다 높은 가치의 질서가 있음을 두식에게 일깨우는 존재다. 홍성원의 초기 장편소설인 『역조』에는 홍성원의 어느 소설보다도 대결의 의미가 두드러지며, 그것은 내용적 측면에서나 형식적 측면에서나 홍성원 소설의 문학적 성격을 잘 드러내는작품이다.
