The full scale of East Asian traditional thought was begun by the gentry [士]. As the gentry became to be literary bureaucrat, so their foundational cultures were literary thoughts. Literature is the art of the presenting the mind. The gentry, the literary bureaucrats investigate the mind in early period. The mind was expressed with the word heart[心], disposition[性], emotion[情]. The buddhist intellectuals and the confucian intellectuals developed many of theories on the mind using the same words with various different meanings. Mind is reality of the truth and also is many of actions in real human minds. The reality of Mind and the actions of Mind are considered as quite different things. They thought the good and the bad, developed many of practical ethics also. They developed the theory of educations on the ethics and made many of different schemes of Mind. These are formed the characteristics of East Asian cultures. In modern age as the gentries of East Asia are disappeared as well the East Asian thoughts of Mind also. As the Western modern thoughts breaks down, so we do recover the traditional East Asian thoughts. It will begin from the point of the Mind.

동아시아의 전통 사유는 士 계층의 등장으로 본격적으로 시작되었다. 이들은 대체로 문인관료로 성장하였으므로, 문학적 소양을 기본 교양으로 삼았다. 문학은 마음을 표현하는 예술이므로 일찍부터 마음에 대한 깊은 탐구가 이루어졌다. 마음은 心, 性, 情이라는 용어로써 등장했다. 불교 지식인과 유교 지식인이 같은 용어를 다양한 개념으로 사용해 마음에 관한 논의를 발전시켰다. 마음은 本體로서 진리의 근거가 되지만, 또한 현실적인 인간의 마음으로 다양하게 존재한다. 본체인 마음과 작용인 마음을 구분하면서, 선과 악을 포함한 다양한 실천론을만들어냈다. 이들은 마음의 본질을 파악하고 윤리적 실천을 위하여 마음의 교육 이론도 발전시켰다. 다양한 도해류와 함께 문학류를 발전시켜 마음에 관한 동아시아에 고유한 문화를 형성했다. 근대 이후 동아시아의 사상은 그의 문화적 주체인 사 계급의 소멸과 함께 단절되었다. 근대 서유럽 사상은 오늘날 파탄에 이르고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 동아시아의 사상적 전통을 회복해야 한다.
