초록

영어

The Sacred Tooth Relic has been regarded as the most precious saintly relics, which was carried from India to Sri Lanka in the early 4th century and has been played the important role in politics and society as well as in religion since then. Safeguarding the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, ancient kings were able to establish their legitimacy, and thus attempted to stimulate people’s religious emotion. Especially, Sri Dalada Maligawa(The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) is looked up to as the most holy temple because it enshrines this relic. It has developed the special rituals for this relic, which are Perahera and Daladā Thevāva. Perahera is the ceremony that the elephants carrying this on make a round the city wall, which has the tradition old enough to be described in Records of the Buddhist Kingdoms(佛國記) by Faxian(法顯), a Chinese monk on a pilgrimage to India pursuing Buddha-Dharma. Daladā Thevāva is served requisitely at only Sri Dalada Maligawa, different from Poojavā, the general offering ritual at the temples. It has been mandatory for the kings to perform this ritual. King Parakramabahu Ⅳ(r.1302-1326) from Kurunegala Dynasty legislated Daladā Siritha of 38 Articles, which specified the preparation process and the procedure of the offering ritual for this relic at Perahera and Daladā Thevāva. These rites have the two aims, that is, one is to have legitimacy of royal authority as well as to stimulate people’s religious emotion, and the other is to prevent natural disaster such as drought and flood and therefore it has the meaning of a disaster prevention and a ritual for rain. Daladā Thevāva is presided by both the clergy and the laity, while Poojavā is by only the clergy. It is performed by the elder of the two sects of Malwatta and Asgiriya, Diyawadana Nilame, the guardian of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the laity in charge in the ritual altogether, which imprints the historical and symbolic meaning of the Sacred Tooth Relic on the general public. This offering ritual throws a new light on Korean Buddhism that restrict the chance for the laity to take an active part in the Buddhist rituals.
