In the era of globalization, the Olympics are of great importance in that they show the overall capabilities, such as a host country’s scientific technology, cultures, and art, etc. and national culture. A host country of the Olympics is focusing on expressing its unique cultural, symbolic image, and a poster among the visual images of the Olympics is playing a role in delivering important information to the public. This study did research on whether there exists a difference in visual representation in the Olympic poster by country through Hofstede’s 4 sorts of cultural level rather than claiming superiority in a country’s culture representation, or putting emphasis on absolute efficiency. As a result of the research, first, this study arranged the cultural characteristics by discovering them from the Olympic poster by country, through which it was found that all Olympic posters contain a host country’s native culture, history and symbol, etc. Second, as a result of developing the analysis tool of design elements using Wucius Wong’s visual elements and correlative elements, and discovering cultural properties inherent in visual representation of the Olympic poster, it became possible to do concrete interpretation of how the difference was reflected. Third, this study could confirm the possibility of being able to interpret the cultural level from the visual representation of the Olympic poster.

세계화 시대에 올림픽은 개최국의 과학기술, 문화, 예술 등의 총체적 역량과 국가문화를 보여 준다는 측면에서 그 중요성이 매우 크다. 올림픽 개최국은 고유한 문화적, 상징적 이미지 표현을 위해 많은 노력을 하며, 포스터는 올림픽의 시각이미지 중에서 대중에게 중요한 정보전달 역할을 하고 있다. 올림픽 포스터는 동일 주제로 백년이상 지속해온 문화예술로 그 배경을 이해하기 위해서는 그 나라의 문화 현상에 대한 근본적인 이해가 필요하다. 이 논고는 특정한 국가의 문화적 표현의 우수성을 주장하거나, 절대적인 효율성을 강조하기 보다는 올림픽 포스터가 국가별로 시각적 표현의 차이가 존재하는지 여부와 그 판단의 근거인 호프스테드(Hofstede)의 4가지 문화 차원을 통해 연구하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 국가별 올림픽 포스터에서 문화적 특징을 찾아 정리한바 모든 올림픽 포스터에 개최국의 고유문화, 역사, 상징 등이 담겨있고, 대부분 시각 이미지로 표현된 포스터로 나타났다. 둘째, 우시우스 윙(Wucius Wong)의 시각적 요소와 상관적 요소를 이용하여 디자인 요소의 분석 틀을 개발하고 올림픽 포스터의 시각적 표현에 내재된 문화적 특질을 찾아 낸 결과 그 차이가 어떻게 반영되었는지 구체적인 해석이 가능했다. 셋째, 올림픽 포스터의 시각표현에서 문화 차원을 해석할 수 있는 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 피상적으로 추론되어 온 시각적 표현에서의 문화적 차이의 존재 여부를 구체적인 사례 분석으로 검증함으로서 정보의 논리적 분석 가능성을 제시하고 그 효과를 설명할 수 있었다.
