The purpose of this paper is to share the findings of a study that focused on the research trend on diversity and identity in Germany and its implications. To achieve the aim, this article identifies following themes: theoretical basis of culture and multicultural society, relationship between diversity and identity in multicultural society, and change of identity from the perspective of ethnicity and religion as dimensions of diversity. The bottom line of this study can be formulated as follows: First, in the studies on multicultural society, it is necessary to connect with emic perspective of migrant as well as macro- framework of the globalized world. Second, hybrid identity, multiple identity, perspective identity and the like belong to the identity concepts narrowly related with diversity, and such concepts may be contrasted with the traditional essentialism. Third, one can observe the tensional relationship between diversity and identity clearly in a context of escalated interaction. One of the social struggles is the struggle for recognition, which is a central moment in discourses about the cultural difference and diversity. Fourth, regarding identity observed from the perspectives of ethnicity and religion as dimensions of diversity, it is necessary and desirable to study the relevant phenomena according to the so-called intersectionality approach. Fifth, considering the tensional relationship between diversity and identity, we have to put emphasis on the viewpoints of in-between space and hybridization, which have emerged from the postcolonial discourses.

본고는 다양성과 정체성에 대한 연구동향을 소개하고 다문화사회로의 변동과정에 놓여 있는 우리 사회에서 적절한 정책과 조치를 탐색하는 데 있어서 유용한 시사점을 도출하는 데 연구의 목적을 두었다. 이 글에서 강조하고자 하는 사항은 다음과 같이 몇 가지 명제로 정식화하여 제시할 수 있다. 첫째, 다문화사회에 관한 연구에 있어서 세계화된 세계의 거시적인 틀과 더불어 이주자의 이믹(emic) 관점과도 연관시킬 필요가 있다. 둘째, 다양성과 연관된 정체성개념으로는 혼성정체성, 다중정체성, 조망정체성 따위를 들 수 있으며, 이와 같은 개념은 기존의 전통적인 원초주의나 본질주의와 상당 부분 대조되는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 셋째, 다양성과 정체성의 긴장관계는 첨예화된 상호작용의 맥락에서 극명하게 드러나며, 사회적 투쟁의 한 가지 차원은 인정투쟁이며, 이것은 문화적 차이․다양성에 관한 담론에서 핵심적인 계기로 작용한다. 넷째, 다양성의 차원인 민족성․종교의 관점에서 정체성을 살펴볼 때, 민족적 소속과 공통의 신앙은 그 자체만으로는 장기적으로 결속을 담보하는 상징으로서 충분하지 못하며, 따라서 교차성 접근방안에 입각한 연구수행이 요청된다. 다섯째, 다양성과 정체성의 긴장관계를 고려할 때 특별히 탈식민주의 담론에서 나온 사이공간과 혼성화의 관점을 강조할 필요가 있다.
