The purpose of this study is to identify the concept of 'the teacher', 'the student', and 'the woman teacher' in Korea. The semantic differential scale was used as a instrument.
The tool was composed of two dimensions, evaluation and potency. Evaluation dimension was constructed with 11 polar Korean adjectives, and potency with 7 Korean polar adjectives. Each item was constructed with seven-step scale.

The results are as follows:

1. Korean recognize the three concepts - 'the teacher', 'the student', and 'the woman teacher' - positively.

2. No sex difference and job difference was found. However, the evaluation about 'the student', 20s and 50s responded more negatively than 30s and 40s.

3. It is very interesting that the teacher group reacted the worst to the word 'the teacher' in ability.

4. Generally speaking, the results of the research in 1976 and in 2002 are similar. However, the image on 'the student' was highest in 1976, the image on 'the student' was worst among three words - 'the student', 'the teacher', and 'the woman teacher' - in 2002.

한국인들이 생각하는 ‘교사’, ‘학생’, ‘여선생’에 대한 이미지를 의미변별법으로 알아보았다. 서울과 경기도 지역의 일반인 318명을 대상으로 수행된 이 연구는 장동환이 개발한 의미변별척도 가운데 평가영역 11개 형용사군과 역능영역 7개 형용사군을 활용하여 7간 척도로 변형하여 제작·활용했다.
연구결과는 1976년에 수행된 같은 내용의 연구결과와도 비교해 보았다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
①‘교사’, ‘학생’, ‘여선생’에 대한 한국인들의 인식은 긍정적이다.
②이러한 결론은 성이나 직업에 상관없이 공통적인 현상으로 받아들일 수 있다. 다만, ‘교사’에 대한 평가와 역능, 그리고 ‘학생’에 대한 평가에 있어서는 20대와 50대 이상이 30대와 40대에 비해서 다소 부정적인 생각을 지니고 있었다.
③교사집단이 자신들의 능력에 대해서 가장 부정적인 반응을 나타내고 있었다.
④2002년의 측정결과는 1976년의 측정결과와 매우 유사한 부분과 배치되는 부분이 공존한다. 즉, 2002년의 측정결과에서도 ‘교사’, ‘학생’, ‘여선생’에 대한 도덕적, 윤리적 차원에서의 평가가 역능에 대한 인식보다는 긍정적이었다. 그러나, 1976년에는 ‘학생’에 대한 한국인들의 인식과 기대가 ‘교사’나 ‘여선생’에 대한 그것보다 훨씬 높았으나, 2002년의 측정결과에서는 오히려 ‘교사’나 ‘여선생’에 대한 인식이나 기대가 ‘학생’에 대한 평가나 역능보다 긍정적이었다.
⑤한편, 1976년의 결과에서는 ‘여선생’에 대한 이미지가 ‘교사’에 대한 이미지보다 한결 좋은 것으로 나타났었다. 그러나 2002년의 결과에서는 윤리·도덕적인 면에서는 ‘여선생’의 이미지가 더 좋았지만 역능에 대해서는 ‘교사’에 대한 것이 보다 긍정적이었다.(주제어-교사, 학생, 이미지, 의미변별법)
