This study analyzed 791 doctoral dissertations from 1970 to 2015 by the National Assembly Digital Library Retrieval System. It was reclassified 157 of the 791 PhD dissertations that main contents and features were conducted by Unification Research in various fields. Through these classifications, identify unification trends historically, thematically and suggest future research directions of Unification. From the 1970s to the nid-1980s it is the initial stage of unification studies. The research was carried out at the level to analyze the system and ideology, unification policy. The 1980s the studies focused on possibility of North Korea regime collapse and short term unification in the late 1990s because of death of Kim Il-sung in 1994. In 2000s the study concentreated on radical unification in the late 1990s and then developed to study on the stable integration research between South and North. In 2010s, the variety of research methods were introduced to unification research. The unification research has been developed for reflection and rational alternatives and future predictions in various aspects. However, research methods have not improved significantly in explain the appropriateness of reunification in limited research methodology. Especially, it needs to improve policy-oriented research and using primary sources for future unification research.

이 연구는 1970년대부터 이에 대한 연구가 활성화된 2015년까지 작성된 총 791편의 북한관련 박사학위 논문 중 157편의 통일관련 박사학위 논문을 중심으로 주요 내용과 특징을 분석하여 시대별 통일연구 동향을 파악하고 미래 한반도 통일 연구 방향을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 분석의 결과, 1970년대부터 1980년대 중반까지는 체제와 이념 그리고 북한의 통일정책을 분석하는 수준에서 연구가 진행되었고, 1980년대 후반부터는 비교정치이론과 국제관계이론 및 비교공산주의이론을 적용한 다양한 통일연구가 진행되었다. 2000년대에는 남북정상회담 등 시대적 상황과 더불어 통일연구는 질적･적 발전하는 계기가 되었으며, 통일이후의 안정적 남북통합에 관한 연구가 다양한 영역에서 진행되었다. 그 동안 통일관련 연구는 다양한 측면에서 과거에 대한 성찰과 합리적 대안제시, 그리고 미래 예측의 측면에서 괄목할 만한 성과를 이루어 왔지만 통일의 당위성을 설명하는 연구방법은 제한된 연구방법론 안에서 크게 개선되지 못하였다. 특히 정책 중심적 편중 연구와 1차 자료이용의 미흡 등은 남북통일 연구의 활성화를 위해 개선해야 할 과제이다.
