Atopic dermatitis most often affects infants and young children, but it can continue into adulthood or first show up later in life. Anti-inflammatory drugs including steroid compounds such as prednisone and dexamethasone are generally used for atopic dermatitis therapy. Acute effects of these medication are expected in many cases, but long-term cure is not guaranteed in most of the cases due to severe side effects. NC/Nga mice in baicalein (SB) was applied in advance to determine the activity of the skin tissue and skin immune cells. Immune cell numbers in the skin positive to CD3+/CD69+, CCR3+, CD11b+/Gr-1+, B220+/IgE+ all of which were up-regulated in AD-induced mice were decreased and returned to normal levels. Histological examination showed that infiltration levels of immune cells in the skin of AD-induced NC/Nga mice were much improved by pre-SB treatment. These results thus suggest that SB can regulate molecular mediators and immune cells that are functionally associated with atopic dermatitis induced in NC/ Nga mice, and may play an important role in recovering AD symptoms.
