In early sixteenth century, Shin Gongje (申公濟, 1469-1536) published an album that contains calligraphy samples from master calligraphers of late Silla to early Joseon periods titled Haedong myeongjeok (Renowned Calligraphy of Korea, 海東名迹). This book is the first collected album of various calligraphers containing only Korean calligraphers’ masterpieces, and numerous editions are extant today as it was published widely in woodblock or stone-carved forms. In this study, extant woodblock editions stored in ten locations throughout Korea are examined, and three significant findings are discussed. Through an analysis of the epilogue at the backside of a stone-carved edition, it is revealed that the woodblock version of Renowned Calligraphy of Korea was first published in around 1515, followed by a stone-carved version supplemented by two notables’ calligraphy in 1530. Furthermore, the contents of Renowned Calligraphy of Korea are examined to analyze the references and writing styles of a total of 106 works by 42 calligraphers. As well, it is found that a clearer distinction between the first part and latter part of editions published soon after the original than those published later, and re-carved editions published later are abridged editions that have omitted several persons’ calligraphic works.

16세기 초에 申公濟에 의해 간행된 『海東名迹』은 신라 말에서 조선 초기에 이르는 명필들의 글씨를 모아놓은 서첩이다. 국내 서예가의 명적으로만 꾸민 集帖으로는 최초의 형태를 이루며, 목판본과 석각본으로 간행되어 현재 다양한 이본이 남아있다. 이 연구에서는 현존 목판본을 연구대상으로 삼아 전국 10곳에 소장되어 있는 목판본을 조사하였다. 그 결과 3가지 의미 있는 결과를 도출하였다. 석각본 뒤에 새겨진 발문을 분석하여『해동명적』이 1515년경에 목판본으로 처음 간행되었고, 이후 1530년에 2인의 필적을 첨가하여 석각본으로 다시 간행되었음을 밝혔다. 또한 『해동명적』에 수록된 내용을 검토하여 총 42인 106작품의 출전과 문장의 형태를 분석하였다. 아울러 초각본에 가까운 형태일수록 전집과 후집의 구분이 명확했고, 축약된 형태로 편집되어 몇 명의 글씨가 누락된 경우는 후대에 다시 새긴 복각본임을 밝혔다.
