Traffic, including transportation and communication, is a spatial movement of people and supplies. Recently, the school tends to include a circulation and information into the realm of traffic. Traffic is a civilized system like a blood vessel which transports and spreads not only people and supples but also a technology, information, lifestyle and culture to different region. Therefore, humane beings built the systems such as a relay station in land, and marine transportation in ocean, appointed the officials and operated them. As a means of transportation, they used horses, ships and palanquins. Also, they promoted a convenience of transportation by building a ferry and bridge and developing the road such as an uphill road. This tendency of the Korean History school to research about the traffic was mainly composed of investigation and excavation of road, traffic route and relay station in land, and diplomatic interaction, trade, ferry, sea route, ship, marine transportation and depository for this in ocean. Along with these, there are many anylsis on humane and materialistic basis of transportation and function. Based on this result of the research, the researcher would like to suggest the way of description of history text book and history education as following. Firstly, in describing the history, the academic research outcome should be based on objective fact and relation, and its amount should be balanced with other categories. Especially the ones who make the text book should recognize significant role of transportation in terms of historical development, and therefore should reflect the outcome of traffic history. Moreover, the textbook makers should provide, apart from the passage about traffic history, the road related to traffic, the excavation site of a building and its data, old maps and geographic map and their application, statistics and the conditions of spatial distribution and geographical conditions and the impact of the traffic on diplomacy, politics, society and economics and its meanings. Thirdly, the makers should improve historical critical thinking skill by helping the students understand the development of motherland dealt with traffic, its technology, overcoming natural barriers, maintaining public relations the cause and effect of establishment of traffic policy and its change. From now on, the education of traffic history should contribute to holistic recognition of traffic history based on spatial and time based knowledge system by utilizing many different style of education in the perspective of archelogy, historical geography, and traffic transportation history.

交通이란 사람과 물자의 空間的 移動을 말하며 運輸와 通信을 포함하고 있다. 최근에는 流通과 情報까지를 교통의 범주에 넣으려는 경향이 있다. 교통은 사람과 물자뿐만 아니라 지식이나 기술 및 생활 방식과 문화를 다른 지역으로 운송하고 전파시키는 역할을 하는 血脈과 같은 文明 體系이다. 따라서 인간은 육상의 驛站과 수상의 漕運과 같은 제도를 설치하여 시설을 만들고 관료를 임명하여 운영하였다. 운송수단으로써 말(馬)이나 가마 및 선박을 이용하였다. 또한 津渡와 橋梁을 건설하고 심지어는 嶺路와 같은 交通路를 개척하여 통행의 편리를 도모하였다. 이와 같은 교통에 대한 한국사학계의 연구 동향은 육상 교통 분야에서는 고고학적 도로유구의 조사와 발굴, 교통로, 역참 제도에 대하여, 수상교통 분야에서는 외교적 교류와 물자 교역, 항로와 항구, 선박 그리고 漕運 및 漕倉에 관한 제도적 연구가 주류를 이루었다. 이외에도 교통의 人的, 物的 기반과 기능에 대한 분석도 많았다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 역사교과서의 서술과 역사교육의 방향을 제안한다면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 역사 서술에 있어서는 학문 연구결과를 객관적 사실 관계에 근거하여 서술 분량을 다른 분야와 균형 있게 서술하여야 한다. 특히 교과서 집필자는 역사발전에 있어서 교통의 비중을 크게 인식하여 교통사 연구 결과를 적극 반영해야 한다. 둘째, 교통사 관련 본문 외에도 학습자료로써 교통 관련 도로나 건물터 발굴 자료 및 사료의 제시, 고지도 및 읍지·지리지의 활용, 통계 자료나 교통조직의 공간적 분포 및 지리적 입지 조건 등을 제시하고 교통이 정치·외교를 포함하여 사회·경제 등에 끼친 영향과 의의를 서술해야 할 것이다. 셋째, 조상들의 교통과 결합한 국토관리와 기술 개발, 자연 장애물의 극복 및 대외관계 유지, 교통제도의 성립과 변천에 대한 인과관계를 파악함으로써 역사적 사고력을 향상시켜야 할 것이다. 앞으로 교통사 역사교육은 제도사를 비롯하여 고고학적, 역사지리적 그리고 교통운송사적 시각에서 학습자료의 활용 및 다양한 학습형태를 통하여 통시적·공간적 지식체계를 바탕으로 통합적 교통사 인식을 형성하는데 기여해야 할 것이다.
