This paper aims to analyze the publication and contents of high school ‘Korean Cultural History’ textbooks in the syllabus period. The syllabus of the curriculum at that time showed that Korean history education in high school was based on the ‘Korean Cultural History’ subject which focused on cultural history. Four kinds of textbooks guided by syllabus were published in that period. The textbook title and the unit title of the ‘Korean Cultural History’ textbooks in the syllabus period were little different from the suggestions of the syllabus. This shows that there was some autonomy in approving textbooks. The unit was simply structured by body text, supplements were hardly used. Joseon Dynasty was most highlighted in all four kinds of textbooks. However, each textbook has different composition regarding utilization of visual materials. Some textbooks have no visual materials, on the other hands, others fully utilized pictures and maps. This study tried to reconstruct the circumstance of the textbook publication and understand the forms of the government-approved textbooks. This attempt can contribute to setting a foundation of discussion on high school Korean history education and textbooks in the syllabus period.

본고는 교수요목기 고등학교(고급중학교) ‘우리나라 문화’ 교과서의 발행과 내용 체제를 분석하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 당시의 교육과정에 해당하는 교수요목을 검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 당시 고등학교의 한국사 교육은 문화사를 중시하는 ‘우리나라 문화’ 과목으로 이루어졌음을 알 수 있었다. 교수요목에 의한 교과서가 4종 발행되었음을 확인하였다. 교수요목기 고등학교 ‘우리나라 문화’ 교과서는 교과서명과 대단원명이 교수요목에서 제시한 것과 조금씩 다르게 서술되어 있었다. 교과서 검정에 있어서 어느 정도 자율성이 존재했다고 볼 수 있다. 단원 구성은 본문 위주의 단순한 모습이었으며, 부록 등은 미약하게 활용되었다. 4종의 교과서 모두 조선을 가장 비중있게 서술하고 있었다. 시각 자료 활용과 관련해서 4종의 교과서가 모두 다른 구성을 취하고 있었다. 시각 자료가 전혀 없는 교과서도 있었으며, 사진과 지도를 적극적으로 활용한 교과서도 존재하였다. 본 연구는 앞으로 교수요목기 고등학교 한국사 교육 및 교과서와 관련된 다양한 논의를 하기 위한 밑바탕에 해당한다. 당시의 교과서 발행이 이루어진 모습을 재구성하고, 검정 교과서들이 어떤 모습으로 실재했는지를 파악하는 데 주력하였고, 향후 다양한 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
